CBC asks: Tell us what the CBC means to you

The comments at the CBC site are devastating. I am actually surprised they have let them through.

How unbiased and honest of them. Just what I would expect.

The best comment I saw was 'If the CBC was a dog the kids would be crying and the gun would have one less bullet in it.'

I'm surprised the comments weren't censored as they have been in the past.

That means they must be after something. Keep a grip on your wallet and a jock strap on both front and back.

The CBC is a publicly funded broadcaster that has to provide a product to everybody who pays for it, and it can't do that without being as balanced as possible. Inevitably that will at times piss off people who lean far to the right or left as the comments here will attest. Those who think the CBC is leftist are forgetting that Rex Murphy is a favourite regular feature, and if anybody's ever watched their "At Issue" panel with any sort of intelligence they would know the right is very well represented in any discussion.

Anything the hard right sees to the left of them (including the middle) is viewed and derided as left wing liberalism even when it's really a balanced, unbiased accounting of the facts. The hard left gets just as angry as the right at times, but maybe they're smart enough to recognize the CBC's role and don't mistake them as a right wing mouthpiece.

The CBC Ombudsman disagrees with you.
On CBCNews.ca, there does not
appear to be a wide range of “pointy” views. For instance, many of those who
complained claimed that there is no one of an opposite ideological viewpoint readily
apparent on the service.

Unfortunately, this appears to be true. As I observed in an
earlier review concerning CBC Newsworld programming, the CBC should not
necessarily avoid having people of strong views on the air, but we must ensure that
people of differing views are given a fair opportunity.

It has been argued by some who have supported Ms. Mallick that the comments that have
been carried in the Comments section provide balance on the subject. I disagree. The
prominent space and highlighting of columnists implies a different status compared to
users who comment on the various stories. Appropriate space should be given to a wider
range of views.

As a publicly funded broadcaster the CBC should be held to a higher standard than the rest, and it is. While not perfect it is the best of the lot because they are not beholden to commercial or political influence like the others are. In terms of impartiality how do you think they stack up against Fox, CNN or our very own SunTV?

Krista Erikson used to let people finish their sentences too in her previous job as a reporter for CBC-TV. But that was before she took up mugging people in front of a camera for SunTV.

I am very grateful for the exposé in regards to another member of the “Entitlement Brigade“, Ms. Margie “You Owe Me” Gillis.
I am always suspicious of those who claim to be devoted to their “art”, but that devotion comes at the expense of others…..what ever happened to the “starving artist” routine?
Rockie, Margie’s Facebook Page describes the “ordeal” as a “hate propaganda”..she’s probably just using artistic license. Right?

I have no comment on Margie whatsoever. Her perceived worth has nothing at all to do with the journalistic integrity of the CBC, SunTV or any other organization. But I will say that had Krista been drawing her paycheck from the CBC and treated any interviewee, no matter who, in such a manner it would have been her last.

Government media of any kind should not exist in this day and age whether you like it righty or lefty.
We have excellent sources of news and Canadian artists seem quite able to compete with others no matter the country, if they are any good. It is truly a waste of tax payers money, cut them loose and let them make it in the real world as CBC's time has come and gone.

There is a world of difference between a publicly funded broadcaster like the CBC and government controlled media. I hope you aren't confusing the two.

Let's get rid of Tony clement and his ridings slushfund during the g8 before we get rid of the CBC under the auspices of saving money.

The CBC does on the whole sit left of centre. This will, of course, appear to be fair and balanced to someone whose views are also left of centre.

Actually fair and balanced means giving facts without biased commentary. Something the CBC is very good at. Krista Erikson used to do that when she worked there before SunTV taught her ambush journalism.

By the way, the only opinion commentator on the CBC news is Rex Murphy. How does that figure into your thinking?

Nope not confusing the two. I'll put it another way the tax payer is paying for CBC and has zero choice in the matter. If one likes publicly funded TV then do what they do in the USA and let them work their ass of for donations and also present some terrific programing.

mmmmmmmmm.....nope. Pretty much every thing the CBC does has a socialist/environmentalist/feminist/PC and or revisionist slant. I realize that these things seem fair and balanced to you because they mostly line up with your views. I know you think you are in the centre, but you are not. As for Rex Murphy; If the CBC were a country club in the deep south circa 1975, Rex Murphy would be the token non white. He's just there so that they look balanced.

Since everybody is lined up left of you on the political spectrum you're probably the worst judge on what constitutes the centre. You have no perspective.

 Nice try dude. I know that I lean right in my thinking (not nearly as right as some people), which means I know where I am. I also know where centre sits relative to me. The fact that you think you are on the centre tells me that you haven't really put your noodle into gear and looked at your belief's in a dispassionate manner. I'll give you a hit about your position; it's on the left. Now, go shoot a resection.

Quirks and Quarks
So-so. In no particular order...

Quebec AM, Breakaway, Vinyl Cafe, Vinyl Tap, Age Of Persuasion, Writers And Company and Cross Country Checkup and that's about it apart from the odd special. The rest is basically background noise. Radio hosts like Vickie Gabareau, Peter Gzowski, Bill Richardson and Don Harron left big shoes to fill and they remain empty. Apart from Stuart McLean no one is left from that era and it shows. I don't watch much tv and CBC-TV would not be at the top of the list if I did.
