Looking to charter a plane
Hello All,
I'm interested in learning about what the costs would be to hire a pilot with a small plane (to carry 3 passengers: 2 adults, one child) to travel from a Montreal-area airport to Owen Sound, Ontario for the Thanksgiving Weekend. Perhaps some of you fly charter, or are likely to know someone who does. Just want to get a feel for what the costs would be for something like this as I've never looked into it before. I have family in northern Ontario and the drives from Montreal are pretty brutal.
Thanks!

Re: Looking to charter a plane
You're looking at roughly 7 hours round trip with a Cessna 172, then another 7 for the pilot to come back and get you. 14 hours at about $200.00/hr, $2800.00 for the three of you. I based your departure from St. Jean which seems to be a reasonably close drive from Montreal but not a major airport.
That's if the three of you and your luggage is under 500 or so pounds. Every plane is different and every pilot charges different hourly rates, so my numbers are quite generic and probably a little on the high side, but not too much. ...on the low end, $2000.00

One has to be careful with a pilot who just offers to fly you up there. That is usually what is known as a chisel charter. Illegal and no insurance, no air taxi licence or anything else. Just some "good ol' boy with a hankerin to go flyin"
Go to the phone book and look under Air Taxi or Air Charter. That will be a licensed air carrier with all the safegaurds and legalities in place. They will be glad to give you a WRITTEN quote, usually quoted as a price per mile plus fuel annd all other charges, with no obligation.
Also, remember that if it is a licensed commercial air carrier, they cannot fly at night with a single engine airplane unless it is a modern turbine powered airplane.
But if you go with the licensed air carrier, you do not have to know that, they will tell you what is legal and safe and what they can and cannot do.

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

Re: Looking to charter a plane
that seems crazy to pay $2800K for a 172, when you could get a 8 pax lear 45 and travel in first class luxury for about $7000 all in. I'm sure a citation jet would be even more reasonable.
for that matter, a navajo or twin cessna can't run more than about $3000 for that trip. I"m guessing at these numbers for piston aircraft, though...haven't looked at those in ages.

Shrug, I'm just going with the rental rate at my local flying club which is actually $227 an hour for the plane and pilot. Then I used my flight planner to determine the time enroute, 3.1 hours one way, given the particular weather conditions at that time. Rather than plan the flight back, I just got lazy and doubled the flight time for the pilot to return to base. Then doubled it all again for the pilot to come back and get them.
Feel free to check my math.
The only twin numbers I can give you for accuracy is a twin comanche. It costs $3.25 per SM or $434/hr. 367 SM for only one leg of the trip, times 4 and the rate per SM brings the Comanche to almost $4,800.
The rates I quote are from my area, I don't know what they are down East
