Re: CATSA Working to Rule?
I saw the carnage today first hand. My flight was delayed almost an hour at YYZ before Air Canada gave up and pulled the bags of those who were still stuck in security screening line. The last passenger who made it had waited two hours in the security line up

How come Air Canada gets all the press...what about WestJet......
Re: CATSA Working to Rule?
I don't get it. I would have thought work to rule would speed them up if anything.
What the heck is going on?

Re: CATSA Working to Rule?
Work to rule...and this differs how speed wise? It's not like there speedy on the best of days. I hope we seriously look into overhauling the entire screening process as it's a massive waste of tax payer dollars.

Re: CATSA Working to Rule?
I have endured the last 2 days at yyz at the hands on these morons. Almost all transborder flights are delayed up to an hour or more. The lineup outside the U.S. customs hall was up to 3 hours at one point I heard today!
There are delays on the gate, waiting for passengers, there are delays on the ramp as we are waiting for the airplanes to push off the gates. Then because we are waiting so long for passengers we lose our ground crew to another flight, so there are delays again. Everyone is pissed off crews, rampies, agents, and especially passengers.
I can't believe these idiots have the power to cause all this havoc. Why is nobody stepping in and bitch smacking these losers back to work? Apparently CATSA is running the show at YYZ the last two days. It is truly mind boggling.

It's 4pm, my reserve period is over, and its time to watch Judge Judy...I've never been more glad to be on reserve and not be getting called in to work
At least I hope it all smooths over for those travelling over Thanksgiving!

A few articles with more information:
http://www.vancouversun.com/travel/Secu ... story.html
http://m.theglobeandmail.com/news/natio ... ice=mobile
Apparently they are wanding each and every person, staring at screens without moving bags through, and generally not doing their jobs for short periods of time.
CIRB granted an injuction against the work slowdown last night, but GARDA has no idea how to implement it. Would seem simple to me: start monitoring individuals and those that aren't doing their jobs, fire on the spot. This is by far the best job any of these losers will ever see. Fire a few and the rest will scramble to hang on to their jobs. Oh and find the ringleaders of this little plan and prosecute them to the maximum extent of the law.
The real ones to blame here though are the traveling public. For years I've heard people cheerfully subject themselves to indignities and security fees saying "Oh well, at least we're safe."
This is going to cost the airlines millions.

Re: CATSA Working to Rule?
That's what we get when we allow essential and highly sensitive jobs to fall in private hands. In many countries, out side of US, UK and Canada, these duties are performed by federal police officers working the scanner. But, I guess we figure we can save few pennies by letting some of these jokers to hold the entire air traffic system hostage.
We get what we pay for.
We get what we pay for.
Re: CATSA Working to Rule?
How true. The same reason we put up with unreasonable tax hikes, poor customer service. Canadians just don't have the balls to rise up against stupidity!ahramin wrote:

Ask and you shall receive:
Minister Fletcher and Minister Raitt issue joint statement on illegal strike actions by Garda screeners at Pearson International Airport No. HS005/11
For release - October 7, 2011
OTTAWA — The Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport), and the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Labour, today released the following statement concerning the illegal strike actions by Garda screeners at Pearson International Airport.
"I expect the union and its membership to implement the decision issued by the Canada Industrial Relations Board on October 6, 2011, and to cease and desist from participating in any further unlawful strike activities, and to resume service levels at Pearson International Airport," said Minister Raitt.
Minister Raitt has appointed a mediator from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service to assist the parties in resolving their outstanding dispute.
"I expect the parties to fully cooperate with the mediator," added Minister Raitt.
"We are also pursuing alternative measures to ensure that passengers and baggage can be properly screened," said Minister Fletcher. "The government will pursue any and all additional actions to ensure Canadians spend this Thanksgiving weekend with their families, not in line at the airport."
Re: CATSA Working to Rule?
right....like she is going to find alternative screeners quickly over this long weekend??? Unless she intends to hire RCMP and police officers at a reasonable rateDoc wrote:"We are also pursuing alternative measures to ensure that passengers and baggage can be properly screened,"
Re: CATSA Working to Rule?
I'd fire them all en-masse. That is the most ridiculous garbage I've ever heard. The protest is over Garda’s plans to implement a new bidding process for work shifts, said Mr. Larocque
Can the government cancel the contract with Garda based on this?
I'd be willing to put up with 2 or 3 weeks of slow service while the feds get new workers up to speed.
Would be better in the long run.
Good thing I'm off this weekend or I might end up fired myself...

If it's only as black and white as you heard my Canoehead friend.
See, corporate greedy Wallstreet pigs will not stop at anything, and this is just a game of saving MORE $$$ that ends up in (you guessed it) THEIR pockets. I happen to know a lot of people at the airport and the word is, they are trying to implement split duty shifts (come at 6am for four hours and then at 4pm for the remaining shift) and eliminate 2 consecutive days off, but give you a day here and another one say 6 days later. Now, I'm first one to admit that there are a lot of rotten apples at Garda and Catsa, but these people have families and more importantly a LIFE outside of screening our shoes and ladies purses. So I don't blame them if they want to sack down their CEO (She got fired from her two previous upper management jobs) and if that means we have to put up for few more hours at the airport - then so be it. Because we are not the epicenter of this planet called Earth, but we coexist in a society with others and I would like for everyone to have a chance and a fair fight. Even for that guy cleaning airport toilets who just may have an engineering degree from a third world country.
On a side note, heard that AC flight attendant's Union CUPE is legal to give 72hr strike notice (again) this Sunday, effectively walking off the job by next Wednesday should their members decline the proposal from few weeks ago. (and it looks like they will) So this may turn out to be a much longer weekend that expected...
Re: CATSA Working to Rule?
Mig,
I can understand their frustrations, but I'm not sympathetic when they approach it this way.
There are proper channels to take before the drastic action like this starts. While I don't normally agree with Raitt/Harper on these labor issues of late, she is correct on this one: get to work.
Having said that, she, and CATSA officials can probably have some influence on working conditions, and 'split shifts' should be immediately 'taken off the table'.
They are a unionized group, and their union leadership should be doing the negotiating/dealing with management on this right now.Using the membership in this way, at this time, shows a lack of good judgement.
To say I'd fire them was perhaps harsh. I'd warn them once (which I think they have been), then I'd fire them.
JMHO

Re: CATSA Working to Rule?
Has anyone been through YYZ today? I have to commute tomorrow and am wondering if I need to show up 4 hours early.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Re: CATSA Working to Rule?
how is this any different from us. refuse direct clearance, wait until we have the numbers prior to push, not taking duty extensions etc..... Despite the inconvenience, I am with them in their ends. we put out how much in airport user fees, and the CEO's take whatever is leftover after the government takes it's cut, capital improvements etc..... What disturbs me is these folks take home is better than low on the totem pole FO's
Re: CATSA Working to Rule?
Morning was bad, midday so far pretty good but slow. It all depends on if it's a busy time. There was maybe 5 people in line and it took me about 10-15 minutes to get through. They had to "re-scan" a bag, twice. Among other SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW things. Just give yourself time just incase. Bypass is not affected.

Re: CATSA Working to Rule?
I don't get it, how is working to rule illegal. You follow your contract to the nail, that is what the company gave you so you work it and all of a sudden your doing it illegally.
As long as your within your contract F#%Kem, if they want you to bend the contract than maybe they should renegotiate to work outside of what is currently wrote.
I believe that with everyone, last year Raitt threatened to legislate us back to work. We work to rule, and now it is illegal activity. Hey you wrote it, don't like it when we operate that way maybe you should think about it more when you write it.

I don't get it. Wouldn't "work to rule" actually speed things up? Or is incompetence in their contract?

Re: CATSA Working to Rule?
Security screening is a joke. I have flown out of Toronto with ammunition in my coat pocket, (accidently, I was unaware until I got to Calgary). As recently as a week ago, a friend of mine carried a pocket knife on a flight and security didnt catch it. So what is it these clowns are doing?
The only three things a wingman should ever say: 1. "Two's up" 2. "You're on fire" 3. "I'll take the fat one"
Re: CATSA Working to Rule?
Providing the traveling public with the illusion of security. Didn't a guy get a couple pistols on an AC flight a few weeks back, all the while he was telling security and AC employees that he had them?Redneck_pilot86 wrote:So what is it these clowns are doing?
Re: CATSA Working to Rule?
This is what they say on their website.istp wrote:Why don't we just get rid of CATSA?

"CATSA was created in 2002 as a Crown corporation governed by a Board of Directors with expertise in aviation, transportation, security and intelligence.....Operating at arms length under the regulatory body of Transport Canada, CATSA reports to The Parliament of Canada through the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities."
Now how easy is getting rid of government again??
The essence of the problem is that our Gov't 'created' this agency as a way of sucking more money from it's people, by collecting billions of dollars on security taxes, purchasing thousands of new scanning equipment and essentially creating jobs to cover it all up. Just like this US Homeland Security branch of their Gov't. They are designed for one purpose only. To capitalize on stupid public fears for their safety.....Great idea, gotta hand it to them.
