Missing Journey/Technical Logs

Post by Howitzer »

Hi,

What do the CARs say in relation to missing logs? I understand that perhaps the Journey Log wouldn't be as big of a deal as the tech. logs. Looking at purchasing an aircraft from the USA that has current logs since 1984, but missing the ones from manufacture up to that point.

Thanks.

Here's how I understand it works:

US aircraft don't have journey logs, anyway. You're asking about the import process; see http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/s ... 6-2695.htm

A Minister's Delegate - Maintenance (MD-M) is, says the TC website, "a Minister of Transport authorized person who provides a service to the public for the import/export of aircraft in Canada."

Whether an aircraft is approved for import (by the issuing of a Certificate of Airworthiiness) is down to the MD-M who performs the import inspection. (http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/s ... 5-2663.htm)

Part of the import process is to open the (new) journey and technical logs that the CARs mandate. Any pre-existing old logs have "historic" interest but no legal significance.

The MD-M has to present paperwork to TC as described in the AWM 505 subchapter G. (Noting that the current AWM on the TC website lists G as reserved, but that previous link gives the proposed subchapter G as of 12 years ago.) and certify that the aircraft conforms to its type certificate.

I can't find any formal requirement for the MD-M to need a complete set of logs to do that; one presumes that a complete set of maintenance logs would help the MD in his inspection though. So you need to find yourself an MD who would be doing the inspection for you and ask them about it.

Here's how to find an MD-M:

I hope that's helpful.

Complete log books are not required.
Proper certification of all life limited items required, ie; engine, prop, accessory overhauls and any parts listed as an Airworthiness Limitation.
At least one year with a sign off of a previous annual inspection will suffice in technical log.

Have stamp, will travel.
Cheers
