Thanks Mike! I appreciate you taking the time to answer me. Over here in Europe we have contractual obligations that can be anywhere between 3 months to 6 months long. My current employer has treated me extremely well so, "if and when" I ever have the opportunity to return to Canada, I would like to return the favour and negotiate a mutually agreed upon notice. Things are different here than back home in Canada, it is not considered acceptable to give a two week or one month notice of leave. We have experienced some guys "bailing out" without notice and not honoring their contractual obligations and the new employers were notified and these pilots were not offered contracts leaving them basically unemployed. I believe that one should remain professional enough to negotiate a leave that is acceptable to both the current and future employers. I have turned down a few interesting offers over the years because the phone rang or an email arrived asking me to arrive in two weeks ready to go... and I could not justify pulling the plug like that considering that when I was offered my current job, my current employer patiently waited for me to honor my previous contractual agreement of two months notice.
This may not be an issue for some, but I take it pretty seriously, that is why I asked about WestJet's modus operandi regarding notice periods for upcoming courses etc. I am worried at my age of missing an offer I can’t refuse if something ever comes my way. After all, treating others as you would like to be treated is a personal code of integrity and speaks volumes about a person’s character. I left every previous employment contract with a hand shake and an invitation to return – which I believe is important.
Thanks again and enjoy WJ... my family recently flew WestJet and had a blast!! They called me after their trip and asked me why I am not working there!! Maybe someday! Who knows!
