Arctic Air on CBC

Post by FlyGy »

New drama starting on CBC on January 10.

ARCTIC AIR is a character-driven, one hour adventure series set in the booming North about a maverick airline and the extended family of unconventional people who run it. Mel, the cantankerous owner keeps his crew of pilots in the air while Bobby, his headstrong business partner, saves the airline from crashing. Each week their hot-shot pilots take on any number of flights to deliver cagey prospectors, to secret diamond mining sites, rescue scientists from a snowed in research camp, water bomb forest fires, or play tour guide for polar bear-seeking Japanese tourists.

Arctic Air stars: Adam Beach (Cowboys & Aliens, Flags of Our Fathers, Law & Order: SVU), Pascale Hutton (Fringe, Rookie Blue, Sanctuary) and Kevin McNulty (The Killing, Endgame, Battlestar Galactica).

Some big name actors, but it looks like it'll be a fictionalised version of Ice Pilots. :)

You do realise that anyone with even a cursory interest in aviation is gonna hate the show and rend it limb from limb. ;)

I rest my case, passing judgement two months before the first episode airs. New Record I'm sure.

Will Bruno Gerussi make a cameo appearance on the first episode? What about Relic?

I doubt that Bruno would bring much to the show but I think Relic (Robert Clothier) would fit in rather nicely and perhaps lend that air of legitimacy that people seem to want.

The actor who portrayed Relic was incredibly cool, in real life:
He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on December 5, 1944, the citation reading,

"This officer has completed numerous sorties in the role of pilot, involving attacks on most of the enemy's heavily defended targets. On all occasions he has pressed home his attacks with great determination and by his personal example of courage, coolness and confidence has set an example which has inspired all with whom he has flown."

On December 23, 1944, while serving as an instructor with No. 5 Operational Training Unit, Boundary Bay, B. C., F/L Clothier was the pilot of a B-25 Mitchell that crashed on takeoff. Three on board were killed, and Clothier was the only survivor, but was severely injured with a broken back. He was paralyzed from the waist down for two years.
I didn't know any of this as a kid growing up watching Beachcombers
on the CBC, of course. Like all red-blooded kids of the era, I thought
that the only thing hotter than Molly was Relic's jet boat!

If "Arctic Air" has Relic's jet boat, I'm in!

Maybe if the pilot episode includes a visit to the cemetary. Otherwise, it's very unlikely. Maybe a seance might be on the show...that could work.

Wouldn't that be great. Sadly he died several years ago. I will never forget seeing him live at the Vancouver Theater playing Alladin's mother the laundry woman.

Do you remember that episode of the Beachcombers where Relic gets those flashbacks, steals the Ultralight and bombs the cop with a bunch of two litre pop bottles?
