Small Aircraft Missing near YOW
Just hearing reports that ATC has lost radar contact of a small airplane approx 7 miles from the YOW airport. Apparently but not confirmed, the aircraft was trying to do approaches and currently all traffic in/out of YOW is briefly suspended until they can locate the missing aircraft.

Listening to LiveATC right now....YOW is open still. They are setting up a search on the east side of the Rideau River. Controller said the last hit on radar was about 7:35pm local. Not sure who was on the other end of the radio calls but they commented that they were told they were "Looking for a Cessna with 6 possibly 10 Passengers". Hoping for a safe outcome to this.

Awful news. Hoping for the best. It's not that nice of a night.

CBC news says it was a "four seater Cessna" complete with a picture of a C 182 with an Australian registration

Re: Small Aircraft Missing near YOW
That is awful news.
If it is indeed the Cardinal that's based locally, I'm sure I (and many people on these forums) knew who was on board.
We've lost way too many friends, acquaintances and colleagues this year. Can't wait for 2011 to be over.

Pretty sporty night to be practicing ILS's. Ceiling at andthe aircraft was trying to do approaches
below Cat One ILS limits, no dewpoint spread, GFA forecast
moderate icing conditions in cloud, and if it's a fixed-gear
Cardinal, severe carburetor icing conditions. I wouldn't
fly the C421 with known icing equipment in that.
I see it crashed about a mile off the end of rwy 07, just south
of the localizer.

And a Cessna 177 Cardinal is doing approaches?chipmunk wrote:Awful news. Hoping for the best. It's not that nice of a night.

Apparently not very successfully. And a Cessna 177 Cardinal is doing approaches?
I know it is not the AvCanada way, but two people apparently lost their lives. Perhaps we could pay them a bit of respect and wait for some facts before beginning the "condolences...now lets speculate" postings.

Two people are dead after a small plane crashed in southwestern Ottawa.
Transportation Safety Board spokesman Chris Krepski says the plane's two occupants were found with fatal injuries after the Cessna went down Wednesday evening.
Two investigators from the board were on their way to the scene to begin trying to figure out what caused the plane to crash.
Police say the plane broke into two pieces when it went down in a field in the suburb of Barrhaven, near the new RCMP headquarters.
Fire and emergency crews remain on site.
The crash reportedly caused a number of homes in the area to lose power. Hydro crews were working to fix the problem Wednesday night.

The GFA hade moderate icing just to the west at 00 UTC.
Welcome to Redneck Airlines. We might not get you there but we'll get you close!
Re: Small Aircraft Missing near YOW
I second that. People here are criticizing for practicing approaches, however the media is reporting that they were inbound to CYOW to clear customs before continuing on to CYRO (Ottawa-Rockcliffe). Nobody knows what's going on yet. Let's see what really happened before starting to whine about it?trey kule wrote:Apparently not very successfully. And a Cessna 177 Cardinal is doing approaches?

Re: Small Aircraft Missing near YOW
The above posted article has been updated to add this
-------------
Fire services and police began a search along the plane's landing path and came across a wing about 45 minutes later.
The rest of the plane was found soon after with its two occupants on board.
-------------
This suggests one wing was not in the same place as the rest of the plane.

Re: Small Aircraft Missing near YOW
It took out a hydro pole, so the wing may have separated at that time, rather than in flight. The crash site is about 2mi short of the threshhold of 07.
no sig because apparently quoting people in context is offensive to them.

Re: Small Aircraft Missing near YOW
Sometimes the wx is not exactly, precisely as forecast. AIM MET 2.4 definesThe GFA had moderate icing just to the west at 00 UTC
moderate icing as:
I hope everyone here knows that you don't go near moderate icing in a little cessna,The rate of accumulation is such that even short encounters become potentially hazardous, and use of de-icing or anti-icing equipment or diversion is necessary.
and that includes the 208. I will not intentionally flight plan through moderate icing
in a turbocharged, pressurized piston twin with lots of power which is certified for
known icing, but I guess I'm just not as brave a pilot as some of the people here.

RIP to the people on board.

Re: Small Aircraft Missing near YOW
Very sad news. I was flying in the area last night and can concur the weather was not fit for man nor beast. That would have not been a good night for a 177.

Re: Small Aircraft Missing near YOW
I landed YOW at about 840 pm last night .Don't remember any ice, maybe just a trace .Got the runway lights between 200-300 agl.
Re: Small Aircraft Missing near YOW
Sounds more like they diverted from Carp when they couldn't get in there, which would be a bit more sane. Still questionable depending on the weather briefing they got, but not as bad as doing training in moderate icing with the ceiling at minimums.Colonel Sanders wrote:Pretty sporty night to be practicing ILS's.the aircraft was trying to do approaches
