Flight Sim Hardware
l searched the past threads on flight sim.
But I could use a bit of help on the following.
We want to set up a flight sim with two screens to allow an instructor to observe.
We want to be able to record and track the session to have post session debriefing.
The objective is to familiarize pilots with the procedures at new airports, alternate airports, etc.
The pilots are all instrument rated, current and competent.
We also would like to know how to customize a panel if that is possible.
Pm me if you like. Thanks in advance Need it in K.I.S.S, format

Re: Flight Sim Hardware
Best single piece of advice is to go over to mycockpit.org and register, look at the forums and then ask questions over there ... a very helpful group who will not steer you wrong.

Re: Flight Sim Hardware
Maybe you need something like the Instructor Station, which run on a separate screen and is connected to Microsoft Flight Simulator:trey kule wrote:We want to set up a flight sim with two screens to allow an instructor to observe.

Totally irresponsible, unnecessary, dangerous, immature and reprehensible. In other words brillant!
Re: Flight Sim Hardware
OK I have the following questions for you:
1. Are you building your own physical pit or just a computer running 2 monitor?
2. What kind of data you want to record? FSX do have flight track play back I believe.
3. When you say 2 monitor, do you mean record what the student is doing or the screen motion?
As far as I know, and tried, FSX do not support multi monitor. If you want to record just the screen motion, you can try FRAPS. It seem a lot of people use that software and it cost $37 according to their site. FSX also don't update their airport layout so it doesn't look exactly the same. For example, CZBB is stuck on the old layout (pre-extension and Taxiway Echo). X-Plane 10 seem to come with an editor so you could fiddle around with it.

Re: Flight Sim Hardware
I wish I could rattle off the answer to your question, but I am not at all computer savy..I cant even figure out how to download porn, which , If I understand correctly is the first lesson in computer knowledge.
Here is the problem, for example, I have no idea what you mean by developing a physical pit.
The data is pretty much track, altitude, and speed only, and it is not super important.
The idea was to introduce things like annuciator warnings to develp good IA response and checklist use, The main objective is two fold, and that is to practice procedures for places like alternate airports where we very seldom ever actually fly, and departures, arrivals, approaches for runways at the main airports that we seldom use. It is very easy to get in a rut as after you have done an approach 50 times into the same airport, day in and day out, on pretty much the same runway. The routine becomes the enemy. And this is a cheaper alternative to the big sim as it is not about actual flying skills.
I did have a look at all the website links..Thanks muchly.

Re: Flight Sim Hardware
Flight Sim series of programs has so many third party add-on programs you can't go wrong. High definition scenery, very highly detailed airport packages, instructor station to track the flight path and introduce system failures like engine outs low oil press ... etc, ability to develop your own aircraft specific instruments, other programs which allow you to enter the "stock" Flight Sim aircraft and change the physics parameters to more closely match your individual aircraft, additional sound packages made from recordings of specific aircraft types, how to install vibration to enhance the flight experience ..... the list is endless of what people have developed to plug into the core Flight Sim series of programs .... and generally they are very inexpensive, or free.
Then there is the off the shelf easy to install USB hardware from dead simple stuff like rudder pedals all the way up to Boeing or Airbus overhead panels and autoflight systems which are absolutely identical to the type of sim you'd find at a factory course.
X-Plane has a slightly better flight dynamics system at it heart, but frankly, its just not all that noticeable .... at least not for a now recreational pilot like I now am. One of the features of X Plane is that versions of it have been approved by the FAA to be applied to licences or ratings under certain circumstances.
Flight Sim 10 can support multiple monitors ... for example ... by "undocking a view" you can have 3 monitors for the outside view, another 2 for the instrument panels such as Capt and co-pilot, another small one in the lower center for the radio stack and FMS, etc.
All this is the kind of stuff that you'll find at www.mycockpit.org and generally the group are very helpful .... heck ... just looking at the pictures of what people have built is an education in itself. Even going over to youtube.com and searching for "flight simulator" will bring up enough home made cockpits to keep you viewing for a week.
I hope this proves to be productive for you.
