Water Cooler - Closed for the holidays
"I've locked the Water Cooler forum for the holidays.
Over the next three weeks only aviation related posts will be allowed on AvCanada's forums."
When do the holidays end?
I have a non aviation question..want opinions on NetFlix..
Good? Bad? Anyone using the service?
Thanks

We're in Calgary and cancelled our satellite service when we got the free month and never looked back. Worst thing that happened is occasional, "cannot connect Netflix not available at this time."
Seems to be a while behind rental/DVD release. I don't know maybe a year in some cases but we never rented so there was no transition period for us where you go, " I've seen all this."
One awesome thing for us is, you don't pay by the title so you check out things you would not have if you were going to get charged $5. If it's good BONUS!! If it sucks you can stop it and move on.

Netflix is GREAT!
It took me a while to warm up to it but it seems in the last 6 months they've added a ton of great content. It would probably take me a years worth of down time to catch up on what I want to watch on there.
It's fantastic for the road when you've got a hotel with decent wifi so you can watch it in your room. I also watch it on my smartphone in the gym on the treadmill. A tablet would work better for screen size but it's not bad at all.
The biggest catch though...you have to have a really good internet plan at home otherwise you could run into some overage charges pretty quick. I think it's something like 1GB/hour for standard definition and 2GB/hour for high definition. Also, you have to think about how to run it through your TV at home if that is what you want to do. You can hook your computer up to your TV but it can be annoying to be constantly connecting and disconnecting (this is what I do). For a little bit more money (it was $90ish during boxing week) you can get a box similar to this:

You can also go with a Playstation, XBOX (requires subscription in addition to Netflix) or Wii, or a TV or Blu-Ray player with wifi.

+1 to Netflix being great. Even though it doesnt have all the movies in the world, there are plenty of great ones on there. Ive never run into the "data overcharge" thing, and my internet is just basic ADSL.

Re: Water Cooler - Closed for the holidays
I've had Netflix for about a year and a half, and I like it. The movies are about a year behind the DVD releases, but for $8/month for unlimited movies, vs. $6/movie at Blockbuster, its a no brainer. The only thing that irritates me is the selection on the US site is WAY better than the Canadian site. One way around this is to log on through a US based VPN.

Re: Water Cooler - Closed for the holidays
I am about 5 months into my Netflix subscription. I agree with all of the above. I watch a movie on my iPad just about every night and usually watch movies that I would never have spent the money on in a Rogers store etc, but occasionally find a diamond in the rough in the "B" movies. The selection is my biggest complaint though and it is true, the selection in the US is significantly better! I pay $6/mo.

I ended up with this little device called Apple TV at X-mas. It connects to my home Wi-FI and gives me lots of options like Net Flix and You Tube. Pretty well the same options as the device above.L1011 wrote:Netflix is GREAT!

Thanks for the comments. I was somewhat nervous as I have read some pretty sad reviews on-line.

I got an Apple TV as well.. probably my favourite new toy! If I can't find something on netflix.. it is easily available for download from iTunes or I'll search for a torrent and load it through my computer! Brilliant device! I'm also impressed with how well a lot of the new youtube content displays! Got it hooked now to the Surround sound and projector!
I've also just switched to an iMac....Why didn't I do this years ago?
