Getting a CAT 1 with a current broken Ankle
Hello Everyone,
I recently broke my ankle. I have a cast and am gonna be out of commission for 6 weeks, possibly longer. I have to get a category 1 medical to begin commercial training in a couple of months. I have 2 questions:
1. Can I be examined for a category 1 medical with my cast on?
2. I currently have category 3 medical, after I get out of my cast and I feel good enough to fly. do I have pay for another exam, or simply talk to a CAME? Or do I not have to inform a CAME? After the cast comes off I will be off all meds.

Your best bet is to ask a CAME. My hunch is that you can do the medical but CARS 404.06 would apply. My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it though.

I held a Cat ! with cast on both legs and finished my Commercial off with them. That was almost 40 years ago. Phone Transport and ask for Dr. Jim Pfaff. He's the Senior Consultant, Policy and Standards, Civil Aviation Medicine, Civil Aviation, Transport Canada.

I would rather stick needles in my eyeballs. Jim has yet to respond to my inquiry as to his position on the fundamental physiological differences between Canadian and American hearts that he maintains exists. I am also not terribly happy with his discriminatory practices, where he will unapologetically and capriciously impose different restrictions on different people with the same condition, depending upon his mood, or perhaps the positions of the planets, or maybe some other reason.Phone Transport and ask for Dr. Jim Pfaff
"Professional" is not what comes to mind, when I hear that name.

Geez I guess on the half dozen or so days I've had his advice in the last 10 years the planets must have been alined.

Asking Jim Pfaff for medical advice would be like asking your refrigerator for diet advice. Sure, it's involved in the process, but I would be truly startled to get any kind of intelligent response.
Re: Getting a CAT 1 with a current broken Ankle
Hey nwopilot. Yes you can get the medical. I asked my mot doctor about this within the last few years. I was in a cast while I was doing my medical. He said there is no stipulation regarding broken bones AS LONG as you can properly manipulate the controls. Hope that helps.
Re: Getting a CAT 1 with a current broken Ankle
Sorry, I disagree. He has been of much help to me. It must be my sunny disposition. Doctors are like everybody else, they meet attitude with attitude sometimes . . .Colonel Sanders wrote:Asking Jim Pfaff for medical advice would be like asking your refrigerator for diet advice. As to the original post, no need to contact Doc Pfaff for this. Just call the office of the saw bones who will be doing your exam. He/she may be occupied, but leave your question with staff. You'll get an answer.

Nothing those crazy bastards do surprises me any more. He threatened to revoke my medical during a hearing for another pilot, when I questioned him on his decision and reasons (or lack thereof).Could you get a Cat 1 if you did that?
In the private sector, we are expected to deal in a professional, consistent manner with people we might or might not personally like. That's something that's clearly not required in the public sector.they meet attitude with attitude

Can you get a Cat 1 medical if you have a broken spirit?

If we look at:

It's probably disqualifying under 1.3(d)

You had a cast on both legs or on each leg? Having a cast on both legs would kind of make it hard to do a lot of things- like pee and put pants on.Driving Rain wrote:I held a Cat ! with cast on both legs and finished my Commercial off with them.

Come on Colonel, while I enjoy reading most of your posts, rare is the one that doesn't reak of arrogance (in caps.)Colonel Sanders wrote:In the private sector, we are expected to deal in a professional, consistent manner with people we might or might not personally like. What, do you change personalities when not writing here? Does your "private sector...professional, consistent manner with people" function in your dealing with the other side, i.e., anybody working at Transport?
My guess is, no, you always go in with guns blazing, even when that's not the best tactic. "Winning hearts and minds" is not just some Lyndon Baines Johnson bullshit; it actually works most of the time.
Now, I'm still at a ski resort. Just heading to the pub, my first toast will be, "To the Colonel, may he long reign o'er us."

He must have had a catheter (sp?) if you're in a cast like that I'd probably suggest wearing a kilt with it. I guess those accusations about guys not using the rudders were serious.Bede wrote:You had a cast on both legs or on each leg? Clearly I have much to learn from you.rare is the one that doesn't reak of arrogance
The important thing is not the technical validity of your arguments,
rather how much you schmooze someone. Got that. Bribery
and corruption, all the way.
PS I assume you are a big fan of LBJ's leadership in the Vietnam
war. Why didn't he run for a second term, again?

Sorry bout the highjack but back to your question at hand....
First off, why do you need to do a cat 1 now? Your cat 1 is only good for 1 year and as long as you are just exercising your PPL privileges which is all you are doing when you are doing your CPL training all you need is a cat 3. You just need the cat 1 in time for your flight test. I would say wait until you are 3 months out from your actual flight test to get it done. Assuming you are young and healthy and hold a cat 3 already there is no reason that you would not pass a cat 1. At the end you will have a longer validity on your cat 1, save some money in that first year with the CPL when you are broke.
Not sure about point 2, never been in that situation.

What's that old saw about "assuming"?
It's got nothing to do with schmoozing, just about how you present your case. With a valid argument behind me, I can dig my heels in with the best of them, believe me. If I'm in the right, I won't give up.
What do the cops call it, "escalation of force?" I'd rather start out in a friendly manner, and achieve success that way. You? Pull out the MP5!

OOh! 200 I dunno about that advice. Imagine spending 30 large on flight training only to find out you have a heart murmur or weird rhythm. Risky stuff. Spend the money on the medical today. If they question the broken ankle just say you're going to be flying an Ercoupe. No feet required.

That is funny I don't usually read a post from CS that I have to try and figure out which side of the argument he is on!!!
Big personality for sure!
Not sure I could hang with him day in and day out! To big a personality!!!!!
But I'd bet he could teach you how to stay alive in anything from an S2B to an L39!
Gotta say I'd like like to fly with the Colonel!
How much is an L39 type rating Colonel???????????

It doesn't matter how well you fly an airplane.
It doesn't matter how well you fix an airplane.
Nobody cares if you crash or not. It's just not important.
What's important is winning your high school popularity contest.

Re: Getting a CAT 1 with a current broken Ankle
There is an old CAT case in jurisprudence that pertains if the legislation/standards haven't changed significantly. A cpl/instructor was actually doing a repositioning cross country flight on a twin (Apache I think) with a private pilot aboard. It was purportedly a ME dual flight. One of the instructor's arms had been broken & was in a cast. The instructor was charged for flying while being medically unfit & the CAT upheld the charge.

I've never said anything about CS's flying experience, knowledge, or abilities, because I think most of it is bang on.JMACK wrote: Not sure I could hang with him day in and day out! To big a personality!!!!!

But the chip on his shoulder? Ever notice that he tries to end most discussions by boasting about his Right Stuff, when it's not even relevant? Like here, a thread about a guy's medical situation.
(And there's at least one other forum member who resorts to that tactic...first initial "C".)
Insert: obligatory apology about thread drift.
