Photo Needed For Project

Post by Old Dog Flying »

I am presently building a P-51D Mustang in 1:32 scale, representing 443 Sqn, City of New Westminster circa Fall 1951. The squadron aircraft had a very interesting trim on the fuselage but I do not have a colour photo to refer to.

Can anyone help with a colour photo or even documented proof of the colour??? I have talked to Jerry Vernon without much success.

Barney

There is an other fellow that completed a similar project and posted photos on Britmodeller.com that might be able to assist:
Finished Mustang Type`s

Tamiya 1/72 kit. (From the Korean war issue boxing for the late HS Prop!)
Leading Edge Decals.
Depicting 9592 of 443 Squadron City of Westminster, B.C., Canada, 1950s. The actual aircraft still exists and many over here will have seen it at Flying Legends at Duxford as F-AZSB 'Nooky Booky'!

Thanks for the help guys but the photos that I'm looking for are for the aircraft with this scheme..The lightening bolt along with the canopy skirt and wing tips are of a lighter colour and having done a greyscale comparison I know that it is not red.

And for Mike: 443 Sqn is now a Maritime Helicopter squadron based in Victoria and although they do not have a squadron historian, the Dep Admin Officer is digging through the archives for me. In addition , the good folks at the Comox Air Force Museum have done a search for me without results
, as have the Langley Museum.

I have the "PF" era decals but it is the colours on the "GY" era markings that are stumping me.

I like this paint scheme for a Mustang:

PS This is obviously a wartime photo, with the twin comanche
and golf cart expertly photoshopped in. Don't you think they
did a great job with the shadows?

ODF. Try the Shearwater museum. I will look at my books when I get home in 2 weeks.

Col Sanders...not war time and not photoshopped! That Mustang is far too shiny for an operational WW2 bird!

Those things are not exactly roomy. I sat in one a couple of days ago. It was yellow.

ODF......Don`t have a pic in my book that helps in your project. Hopefully 443 or the Shearwater museum will have something.

Barney, there is absolutely no way you can dismiss red by doing a greyscale comparison - trust me, I studied graphic design for 3 years in another life. There is an infinite number of shade for every single colour out there - from light to dark. If I was to bet, I'd say it was red.

I had no luck with finding a true picture.

Good luck!

Benoit: Here is the photo with the comparison chip and it clearly says "not red". I have the "BU*G" decals as well but this scheme really turns my crank..because it is different

The picture you are using seems overexposed on its left side.
But I have to agree: its looks like a different colour than the maple leaf.

Yellow?

Both Patrick Martin and Jerry Vernon claim that the 443 Sqn Mustangs had blue lightening bolts but cannot produce colour photos to validate. Jerry was a maintainance officer on the squadron and Patrick's father was an airframe tech.

We have ruled out yellow as a previous photo had a Harvard parked beside the Muatang and there was a big difference in tonal qualities.

Thanks for the input..every little bit helps. Nice BUG by the way

It appears much lighter than the outside circle of the roundel.

Here's an article. The paint scheme is much different from your's but it's interesting to see the black and white picture then colour ones.
