Polarized sunglasses or not?

Check to make sure the aircraft you fly doesn't have a polarized windscreen. I bought some polarized sunglasses a couple of years ago thinking they would be great, ended up not wearing them flying because they made the view out the front all blotchy. Same effect out the back window of my car.

My wife bought me a pair or polarized sunglasses -we had to return them as I couldn't see half the guages in the plane.
I prefer the Serengity photocromatic lenses.

unless you are behind a clear wind screen like a 172 an such the polarized glasses don't work well - any aircraft with a internally heated windscreens will display lines in your vision - I know a few guys who wear polarized glasses and do OK with it but most do not and opt for the tinted glass - graduated tinting like "the drivers" worked the best for me --

If you're going flying, no. If you're going fishing, yes. You can see the pike in the bays no problem.

Also you won't see the glint off other aircraft. Might make it harder to spot traffic.

I flew with polarized ray bans for a bit. It was ok looking out through haze, but if you tilt your head more than 10 degrees all the gauges, gps, and iPad went black. No good. I now have non polarized oakleys.

Hah, I'm the opposite of almost everyone here. I used to use non polarized tinted glasses, but every time I looked into the sun I couldnt see ****! The glare was too bright. One of my captains told me he uses polarized lenses and he has no problem with them, so I got them. Haven't had a single problem!

I've never had any problem with them float flying. I kind of like polarized lenses. I say go for it. You can probably afford to break your monomaniacal stare at the GPS and your IPAD for a few seconds. I don't think that's a problem for most people.

Then again I'm a crusty middle-aged bastard (the worst kind). My preference is also for the word "Your" to be spelled with all four letters.

Both. While polarized can make seeing the GPS hard, they cut the glare like nothing else. I usually have both on hand and choose as need dictates...

Contrary to most here, I love my polarized sunnys. I have used both but always seem to go back to the polarized ones. We fly a Challenger 601 and I haven't had any problems. Our aircraft has the 1990's style CRT displays and there is no interference. Sometimes at the wrong angle there is a slight rainbow hue to the windscreen but it isn't really bothersome. The only other issue is the iPads we use for our charts, the polarization interferes with the iPad screen in portrait orientation but is fine in landscape. I find the polarization greatly cuts back on my fatigue and and with the brown tint driving lens I get great definition when it comes to spotting weather and cloud even in low light.

Sunglasses of choice: Oakley Gascans with the VR28 Polarized Lens.

To go off topic slightly, which is unheard of, I know: I have been wearing polaroids for a few years. I find that the lens are too dark. They work fine in most planes I've flown, but I am now looking for sun glasses that will reduce the intensity without affecting my view of the guages in those semi sun/cloud days. I definetely want wire ear frames to reduce the noise entering my DC noise cancelling head sets. I do have the luxury of getting non prescription frames. Any suggestions on tint or off the shelf glasses. Please, not the old Ray Ban aviators, although I'm old enough to wear them, I would something a little more trendy. I fly mainly low and slow.
