Visited the TSB today ...

Post by xysn »

... For Doors Open Ottawa. One of the first things they said is that the TSB is an independent accident investigation body. (i.e.: They are not TC)

It was pretty cool how much they can learn about the state of the airplane prior to an accident, from the airspeed needle leaving a mark on the dial at impact, to the deformation in an annunciator light bulb that would suggest whether or not a warning light was on at the time of the accident. Plus they have a serious collection of black boxes. It's interesting how they can read the story the airplane is telling, even if there's no person left who can.

We had look at signs of molten turbine blades being shot through a helo engine, a materials lab to study fatigue and fracture, a scanning electron microscope, recovering data from destroyed GPSs, the black box data extraction lab, and the math of photogrammetry (e.g.: Locating a camera in space based on the picture it took)
