Starting my training again

Hello guys
I am very new to this forum but I have had about 12 hours of browsing. I do not want to be a troll just get some help and learn as much as i can.

Heres my story:
6 years ago I was training for my PPL and I loved to fly, thats all I wanted to do. In fact I could fly a whole lot better than I could learn the ground school element. I passed my inflight test no problem but failed my writen test in 2 areas. I got very discuraged and stopped flying.

Well 6 years later I want that licence!

I have signed up for a very good ground school (no names but the first 1 I did the instuctor talked more about the different planes he has piloted rather than teaching us what we need to know, everything was....well I will teach you that when we fly. great but I had a different instrutor for the flight section)

My question is the flight test. I got my old ptl and my flight test papers, do I repeat the entire flight test or is it similar to if I had a licence and let it lapse?

I dont mind doing it again I have no interest in flying if I am not legit and prepared for it. The instuctor I did a flight with the other day is so new(3 weeks on the job) he had no clue what I had to do. Great guy tho!

Sorry, you have to do the flight test again.

CAR 421.26(5) applies:

Within the 12 months preceding the date of application for the licence, an applicant shall successfully complete a flight test as pilot-in-command of an aeroplane in accordance with Schedule 3 “Flight Test for the Issuance of a Private Pilot Licence – Aeroplane” of Standard 428 - Conduct of Flight Tests.

Sorry about having to start over again. I did my again IFR again after letting it lapse and it was frustrating.

I got 88% on my written exam with this software. ( Not to brag but the software helped)

I did their Instrument Rating Ground School on the computer. They have a PSTAR and a Private and Recrealtional Pilot one as well. It cost like $40 ... It was the best $40 I ever spent in Aviation. Well worth the money. Check it out. I think they have a free trail where you can try it before you buy it. I love it ... you can update it whenever you are on line.

Thanks I will have a look at the site, anything thats helps is a good thing to use in my books. As far as my 80-some hrs, do i still get credit for them or do I need to build up the required 45hrs again? I dont think it will take that long to get back up to speed. Afterall the instructor I just took a ride with says "its like riding a bike Matt dont worry" It didnt feel like riding a bike to me

No, you'll just need to get your PSTAR back so that you can fly solo, and then do enough time to get you up to flight test standard.

Just a suggestion, worry about getting your written test done first so you aren't back here asking us this again in a few years, or if it discourages you again then you won't have wasted time and money on getting ready for (and doing) a flight test. No offense, but if a written test is enough to discourage you from flying, it doesn't sound like you really are that interested. You might be better served by when you get the itch just hiring an instructor to let you fly around.

That is sound advise and something I am going to do. I was a lot younger and have a different mind set now. I took flying forgranted and had a money backer (mother and father) Both have tragically passed away at a very young age. I am doing this on my dime now and have about 10 years of maturing since last flown.

Free advice: Aviation is more than just about wiggling the flight controls. It is also about paper. Aviation operates on a goddamned sea of paperwork.

I'm glad to hear you have your old PTR and pilot logbook. Hours are forever. They never go away. Make sure you get your logbook certified periodically by the C.F.I. and NEVER leave it at the flight school, and don't lose it.

The PTR is left at the flight school, and it goes to Transport when your licence is signed off, and you will never see it again.

+1 for this software. A few questions are a little over-the-top, but I believe it helped me immensely with the written as well.

You passed the flight test, but failed the written and gave up.

Write the PSTAR to regain your student pilot permit, then write the private pilot licence exam - before even flying again.

Get the study guides for the PSTAR and the private pilot licence exam from the Transport Canada website (the latest flight test guide will also be there).

Some people like to study online, but if you prefer books, there are several different study books and practice exams available. Then go write the exam *when you are ready*.

actually never expires. See CAR 421.19(2)(d)(iii).

From an Authorized Person standpoint, all he really needs to do is
a category 3 (or 1) medical, and a new Student Pilot Permit can be
issued, to replace his expired one (they are good for 5 years from
the date of the medical).

Do remember that Aviation operates on a sea of paperwork, which
frankly precious few people can push.

I stand corrected; I presumed that once the Student Pilot Permit had expired, the PSTAR had to be re-written again. But now I see that the CARs say nothing about expiration.
