Re: ATR versus Dash
So the Q400 out climbs/cruises the ATR but doesn't sell because it burns more fuel. What happens if you just pull the power back a bit?

Re: ATR versus Dash
So do the Dash Q4s, and they are way easier to trim when they are fully booked than the ATRs... Plus the Dash Q4s don't need a tail stand to be loaded, whereas the ATR 72 does. All of our customers using ATR 72 (mainly OK and LOT) have SOPs regulating the loding of the aft compartment only to started after the first passengers have / are boarded, so the chance of tail tipping is minimized. LOT even goes further and forbids a loading where the aft compartment will have more weight than the front. All that is unnecessary with the Dash, as it is pretty nose heavy.onspeed wrote:In terms of cargo compartment the ATR have both forward and aft which make the weight and balance simpler.
Re: ATR versus Dash
I've never flown a Dash-8, but the ATR42 & 72 carry ice just fine. If you people are referring to the Roselawn accident in 1994 as an example of how the ATR doesn't carry ice then you're out to lunch.CL-Skadoo! wrote:Have you flown the ATR in ice? Because I will argue with you all day on that point. The Dash 8 does just fine with ice as does the ATR.imarai wrote:The Dash-8 series carries ice much better than the ATR-42 -72 series. With the exception of the Q400, the ATRs are a wee bit faster in cruise.
Re: ATR versus Dash
The ATR has a poor record in icing conditions relative to the Dash-8.
Re: ATR versus Dash
Pelmet, it's been said before, unless you have actually flown the ATR, how can you even comment on its icing characteristics? If you are referring to Roselawn, any large turboprop in the same conditions would likely have had the same outcome.pelmet wrote:The ATR has a poor record in icing conditions relative to the Dash-8.
I've flown the ATR for 6.5 years in Canada and have never had an icing issue. Enough about the icing already, the ATR is quite capable of handling ice.
Re: ATR versus Dash
The ATR accident in ice was poor procedures that have been changed. They were holding with some flap down which allowd ice to accumulate behind the boots. On the dash we avoid that for this exact reason. I believe ATR operators have changed their procedures as well to avoid this situation.
