Webbwood Airport

Post by Lotro »

Is anyone familiar with the Webbwood Airport?

http://www.ourairports.com/airports/CA- ... rt=CA-0403

It shows as abandoned on the VNC just by Espanola. I can't find any information on the internet that indicates when it was active for, who owned it, why it closed, who owns it now etc.

I'm hoping someone here might be familiar with it.

Tks,

I don't know about the Webbwood airport but I have flown into the Espanola West, grass strip a number of times. It is in pretty good shape and about 2000-2500 feet long and very wide. There are a few Cessna's, a Stinson and a few home built aircraft based there.

You can fly there and then go looking for the Webbwood one.

I recall an accident that happened there about 15-20 years ago with a PA28 (I think) with two men and two children on board- seems to me it was a W&B issue on takeoff and the end result was 4 deaths. I'm going from memory, and I've tried to find anything on the accident and had no luck. In fact, Google is pretty sparse with any information on this strip.

You would think there would be something about Webbwood International somewhere.

This is the accident you're likely thinking of:

http://www.tsb.gc.ca/eng/rapports-repor ... 8o0190.asp

It was at Espanola West in 1998. The pilot was taking off from Espanola West and going home to Ottawa/Rockcliffe. They attempted to take off three times, and got airborne on the 3rd attempt but stalled into the trees at the end of the runway and everything burned in the post-crash fire. It was a combination of heavy weight, the flaps were fully extended and the runway surface was wet grass and perhaps a little bit of get-home-itis.

Webbwood is just south of Agnew lake. It is (was) sand/gravel. Last I flew in there was mid 80's, not sure what shape its in now (but google makes it look like its ok). Call Agnew Lake Lodge, it use to belong to them, maybe still does, you can walk to the lodge and grab lunch or rent a boat for fishing...good luck.

Yes you have the facts correct on both the Webbwood and Espanola West airport. I am not sure if the Agnew strip is still useable.

The crash at Espanola was horrific. I believe the victims all jumped out of the burning a/c that was in the trees... When they were on the ground below the a/c, all the fuel was pouring out on them. They were all alive and talking for some time after the crash. My buddy was the local fire chief at the time and he said it was the most horrific thing he had ever seen or heard of. Very very sad!! There was a lot of counselling required for the emergency crews on scene.
