A plane chartered by Kinross Gold crashed in Mauritania’s capital Thursday, the Canadian mining company said, killing all seven people aboard.

The company said in a statement that there were no employees on the plane, which was carrying two pilots, two local customs officials and three “contract security personnel.” A spokesman confirmed that none of the people were Canadians.
The plane was contracted to carry gold from the company’s Tasiast mine, about 300 kilometres north of the capital. According to the company, it was not carrying gold at the time of the crash.

An aviation official in Mauritania had earlier told Associated Press that the plane caught fire shortly after taking off from an airstrip in Nouakchott, capital of the West African nation. The pilot attempted to return to the runway, the official said, but failed to reach it.

Agence France-Presse said that the plane was a refurbished DC-3. Long a workhorse of African aviation, the DC-3, which first flew in the 1930s, remains in use across the continent.

“The incident has not affected normal mine operations or flights of personnel to and from Tasiast,” Kinross said. “The incident is not expected to affect gold shipment schedules.”
