Instructing in Ottawa area

Post by DanWEC »

The time have now come where I have to make the important decision as to what Ottawa area FTU to do an instructor rating with (with intent to stay and work at said school).
Choices are currently Cornwall, RFC, and OFC. Each with advantages and disadvantages. I have spoken to the CFI of the RFC at length so far, SG is a terrific guy, and the club environment is a great fit. No ME. (But do have a Super Dec for aero and taildragger). Eventual MIFR teaching is where Cornwall would have a large advantage. I will be staying in the YOW area for at least several years as my wife continues to climb the ladder in her current profession.
Several people have offered various suggestions thus far, but I'm still trying to decide.

Previous to the upcoming move, I have not yet lived in Ottawa, or had any dealings with any of the schools- so I'm a bit of a fish out of water. If anyone with more experience can offer any opinions, I'd appreciate it greatly.

PM or email is fine.

Thanks, and Cheers-

DWEC

Well, I'm no instructor ... but I learned to fly at RFC, and now own an A/C I have based there ... great community, good location, good instructing (as best I can tell anyways), in a large city center, SG is indeed a great CFI, and we have several class 1's also.

'tis true we don't do multi's, but that's about it ... PPL, CPL, Night, IFR, Aerobatics, all available, seems like a pretty good selection to me.

Don't think you'll see a twin any time soon though ... they're worried about noise I think.

The fact it's a club is a big plus IMO.

Cornwall's bread and butter is MIFR ... but do they do a lot of anything else? Is there alot of ab initio training going on there at all?

Dunno much about OFC, I've heard fo some discontent, but it's unsubstantiated rumours for me ... others here will know more. I think they do the Algonquin program? That might be appealing as an instructor ...

OFC does do the college program. Speaking with a class 1 there recently he said that always hire a few instructors for that program in early September. They have a twin however it's only their class II's that fly it understandably.

Thanks for the input Kamikaze. I am leaning closer to a solid decision

+1 for RFC but I thought they had a twin at Gatineau? And they have instructors that speak English no problem. Also have a Grob for Acro.

RFC has no twin anywhere ... And the Grob in the region belongs to OAS, they do their aerobatics on it.

RFC uses a SuperD for the aerobatics.
