Time for a new Logbook??
Went through my logbook tonight. On a few pages I didn't "bring forward" the correct total. Must have been really late at night or I just wasn't paying attention, but I ended up 9.1 hours short of what I have actually flown. That's enough to cause concern. I'm not a fan of "crossing out" the error, there's ZERO space to do so. Is white-out allowed? Or should I just bite the bullet, buy a new logbook, and copy my hours into it? Ive got about 24 pages of stuff, no easy task I'm sure. I've had my book certified a few times already, I'd lose that should I get a new book obviously, but I've also sent my book to TC for review and they never caught the error either.
What do the CARs say about this? Is white-out acceptable? I'm going to assume not. Thanks guys.

The only thing I found in the CARs was 421.08 which relates to the loss of a personal logbook. Nothing about modifying the existing one.
Re: Time for a new Logbook??
The easier, and neater way is to do a correction entry - such as for route put: Correction due to addition error, and add the missing hours in the appropriate column. Then when you total that page, your time will be accurate. Since all your individual flights should be accurate, this just neatly corrects the error.
As far as I know, there is no problem in doing this.

Re: Time for a new Logbook??
I suppose you could buy a new logbook. It might get cost and time prohibitive later on, as I am sure this won't be the last error you make.
White out is a no no for all written entries for logbooks and technical records. It not only has to be crossed out but it has to still be legible.
I simply cross out individual entries and correct them in the same box, or if there isn't room, simply cross out the entire entry and make a new one.
I'm pretty obsessive about how neat I keep logbooks, so if I can do it, you can do it.

FlyYukon's suggestion is what I used to do when I had a paper logbook. I hate crossing things out; whiteout would be equally as hideous. This was the best compromise. I would put an entry adjusting the time and in the comments section I would give the reason and date the error occurred.

Digital my friend... fixes all problems nicely...
I switched fairly early on so it took a couple days to transfer everything, but now I am very glad I did.

Re: Time for a new Logbook??
Thanks for the tips guys! I'm EXTREMELY anal about my logbook, everything needs to be neat and tidy. I think for now I will buy a new book and begin transcribing my entries over. From then on, I will use the "correction entry" method should I require it.
I'm not completely opposed to an electronic log, even if it serves as just a backup. There are a bunch out there, what are most people using?

I started using a piece of paper with lines to separate everything like a log book page. I do the math on it every flight, then it's easier to keep a running total 1.x hour at a time with no mistakes. I can scribble all over it until it's right if there is an error. That way I don't miss a line adding them up due to horrible accounting.
Once I get to the bottom of a logbook page I transfer the correct total line over.

I add all of the times up in the column, write down the total on a scrap piece of paper, then subtract them and see if it zeros.
Good thing I don't fly many hours otherwise that would be a PITA. I am planning on biting the bullet and getting Log Ten Pro... and then painfully entering the last 12 years of flying into it....

Re: Time for a new Logbook??
Depending on the hours you fly it would also be east to set up an excel spread sheet with the same number of lines as your logbook and let excel do the math. Assuming your entries are correct so are your totals. However if you are going that far might as well go whole hog digital. Lots on that topic if you search.
Re: Time for a new Logbook??
Each year I sum up, on a dedicated page in my log-book, the flying made. If I tally up all the hours and find a discrepancy, then I asterik the incorrect entry with a number and add that footnote to my dedicated summary page stating the reason. I initial the correction, and recalculate the running totals to the new page of a new year. Done.

Show me where it says you can't. Mine has whiteout. Was there when TC checked it for ATPL. No issues!

Mine too, no one said anything. I made a note saying it was corrected for entry errors.Skyhunter wrote:iflyforpie wrote:I suppose you could buy a new logbook. It might get cost and time prohibitive later on, as I am sure this won't be the last error you make.
