And there's a Hell of a lot of pilots who really appreciate what you guys do! Keep that in mind. Okay?bring me the horizon wrote:As an AME Apprentice and aspiring commercial pilot I can say that everyday that I go to work and touch an airplane I feel motivated to keep that aeroplane in a fit and safe condition for flight as if my family were flying in it. It’s really goal oriented.
Once I left the cowling unlatched on a kingair and I heard about it from the PIC but accidents do happen. I take it as a grain of salt and remember to never let it happen again. And even as us aspiring AME’s hear flack about our mistakes, it’s a lesson in experience that we learn from.
Everyday I go to work, I look for snags and that’s the mentality that I keep in the work place. Complacency is not so forgiving. I find Aviation as a learning curve and the more I can learn and grasp, the better of a mechanic/pilot I can become.

Re: Do you still enjoy aviation?
Some great posts. I quite flying 20 years ago and over 30 aircraft to concentrate on sailing...was not going back! After years of offshore sailing all over the place I returned to become a dirt dweller again.. I renewed my medical and bought a little aerobatic biplane and a month ago I bought another plane so my wife could build some hours in a tail wheel. Like others here we still have motorcyles we play with but flying was always too much fun. Huge changes in aviation in 20 years, most of them not for the better. I still love flying but sailing is a close second. Trey's remark of Mothers milk on the chin almost made me spit my drink out, god that was funny! I'm older than you Trey (I think) but if your in the Vancouver area drop me a note and we'll take the little Pacer out for some fun.
Re: Do you still enjoy aviation?
I quit flying commercially in 2009. I miss it huge except on paydays, early in the morning, and vacation time.
I still kick around in an amphib Caravan now and then for a local oil mogul which is fun but optional. But mostly now when I fly, I do it for fun. Waaay better. I'm zipping out to Toronto from Lloydminster in October for a meeting, then west to Winnipeg for a retirement party at Selkirk Air. Then even further west back to home. I could take an airline but it is a 3 hour drive to the airport in Edmonton, another 1.5 hours to get on and take-off, plus travel time, landing, getting the luggage, etc. By then I will be on my first glass of wine while having a nice diner at Rae and Jerry's after parking at St. Andrews and driving in to Winnipeg. After an overnight to visit family, off to Buttonville via Marathon. Yep i could get stuck in the weather north of the lakes, but I've got October off so who really cares?. My wife and I will grab a nice little hotel in that case, just like I did back in 1986 in Atikokan. My Mooney does 170 mph on 10.4 USG per hour. Not cheap but cheaper than an airline, and waaaay more fun. I get to leave when I want, and fly with whom I choose. Now, if I can get my four new servos on order, I'll have a working autopilot which would be even nicer. Hopefully the Telex Stratus 50's arrive in time for the trip as the bird is just a bit loud. And if my little doggie doesn't barf on the new flooring, my life will be complete..... WOO HOO
Yeah, I still like flying.

Yeah, I still like flying.

Not as much as I want to. Too many issues between unions and mgmt dragging morale down.
Re: Do you still enjoy aviation?
Yep.
I like it so much I decided to get a second job flying.

Re: Do you still enjoy aviation?
Went aviating today in the wee Grumman beer can just boring holes at all of the airports in the Lower Mainland..except YVR...Keep it in tight..slip like hell from down wind to just before touch down and sqweak it on at the displaced threshold line...Damn what a great feeling!
Now if we could just get NavCan to quit assigning all these damned frequencies every 5 miles it would be great.

My son just took his first fam flight with air cadets this morning and the smile still hasn't left his face. For him the answer to the question is a definite YES.

I enjoy not working Mon-Fri 9-5, and I enjoy take-offs and landing.
