Pilot salaries in Russia

I was surprised that their salaries are as high. Here are the news article and Aeroflot job posting:

Russia’s Aeroflot airlines is recruiting pilots for new Sukhoi super jets 100, the company’s spokesman has stated.
He said pilots and co-pilots for regional flights are needed. They will get a competitive salary of 340,000 rubles (10,000 dollars) a month.
Pilot’s packages in Russia have become way more lucrative that those offered in the CIS and even the EU, where in some countries several hundred trained professional struggle to find jobs.
Aeroflot pilots receive 70 days a year of vacation, while EU companies pay for only 20-30 days, according to Vitaly Savelyev, director general of the Russian national air carrier. The amount of hours pilots have to spend in the air is also considerably less in Russia, he added.
Russian-speaking pilots from the CIS seem to be more favorable candidates for possible new job openings in Russia, according to airlines’ top-management.

Well, don't forget that the cost of living over there is substantially higher than here.

Also you pretty much have to be russian-speaking (English won't get you far to say the least), and generally expected to have an aviation university degree. Their pilot training is traditionally done via a university-like structure.

At the same time the aviation culture and structures are in the transitionary phase after the collapse of the old system, so you will be dealing with weird and often irrational things. Often rules that are bent, or safety standards that are compromised. I suspect that it will continue to be the case for another decade or so, before it stabilizes.

If you can get tax exemption its very good salary... $11,000/month tax free. Its close to emirates

I think in the context it means that the ATPL-equivalent and airline experience is required (hence the "linear driver" from the broken translation of their industry terminology).

As a matter of fact I do. Or you can own and fly anything from Cessna's to Yaks. But I'm not going to go against the the 007-inspired stereotypes, it is pointless.

The other question is the friendliness of the large commercial airports to the small GA aviation. Yes, indeed you won't be welcome at SVO or MOW. Not unlike you going to YVR, while possible hardly enjoyable. Regional and small airports is where the most of the GA is there.

Generally speaking while the GA is available and alive there, it is not as developed that is fact as well. Less radar coverage (available to GA), weather services are not as good or accessible to private pilots etc. However, same comparison with the same degree of difference can be made between Canada and US: availability of airports and services, technical advancements etc. Nothing is perfect under the sun. But it is better to know and experience the places and speak from that.

Stay near all the bigger cities in the west and you'd probably be ok with just English but what fun would that be? What about avgas, 100LL equivalent?

You might be right suggesting Canada is going the wrong direction here with regards to GA. Eventually a guy might need to go there to enjoy just flying for fun.

English will do for the IFR international flights coming to major airports (but still puts you at disadvantage). For the GA flights it is only Russian, partly because no one speaks English but also it is a legal requirement that the PIC has to be able to do radio work in fluent in Russian. Otherwise you'd have to fly with somebody else being the PIC.

Fuel is not a concern. You might what to check who's supplying the rest of Europe with what's left of dead dinosaurs.
