Yes, text is really not very good for communication. I see it quite a bit. Beer and snacks are usually bonus.

I'm russian Beef, born, raised and educated in Moscow. I caught the flying bug for real here however. So I learnt to fly and got into the aviation scene here. Only then I started to be curious about what is going on over there, since it is natural for me speaking the language. And they happened to have an extensive aviation history worth exploring as well. Anyway, over on that side of the pond I had a chance to fly a few interesting airplanes - a couple of Yakovlev Yak-18T, Suhoj Su-29, and my favourite - Beriev Be-103. Almost decided to bring one home. I probably should have. A far cry from my little DA20 :)

I had not even heard of the Beriev Be-103, looks fun. Did you take one on the water?

I'd love to cross the Bering Strait someday, doubt it's ever going to happen.

I'm sure working as a pilot in Russia is the same as working as a pilot in Canada.
A big, northern country. It's cold. The money sucks. Shitty airplanes. You have to deal with Russian (French).
May as well stay at home. Then again the Vodka may be cheaper.

Yes, a bunch of water landings on the lakes and a river. I thought it is a perfect airplane for West Coast. Can really go places here, and in comfort of two reasonably economical engines (Continentals 200hp per side). Little thrust differential as they are close to each other. No silly floats hanging from under the plane so I would not have to put it on the river and than drag all the way to my hangar, as many float-only owners doing it.

Crossing the Bering Strait sounds more than doable. Good dream to have. I'll come along. There will be lots of water, mountains, rain and huge forests. Wait, we have it here in BC! :)

Well that solves my language barrier. I just need a ton of money now I suspect. There's no 100LL in the north east there so we'd have to ship some or at least arrange it somehow unless we get a plane that runs on diesel.

If I win a couple million bucks canadian I'll PM you. We might have a third Internet stranger tagging along but he does speak Russian.

And it looks very suspicious, though. Because the most typical requirement in Russia is level 6.
Most likely that means, you gonna fly local only.

If you wish to rent or learn, multiply by 2-2.5 versus Canadian rates

Well that might be a bargain if the wages are as much as the quote in the original post. That seems to be for a pretty high time guy though.

I wonder what it is like for younger people starting out there? I suspect it's pretty difficult. Partially due to the high cost of training.

I'm sure times changed, and now it is different. Before you did not have to pay anything (state-sponsored education, including the flight training). In fact you were paid an allowance while you were in training. I know, I know... that system is probably dead now.

I'm sure it is complicated but I think the wages then were quite a bit lower also.

It is complicated. For sure wages were a lot lower in absolute numbers, or converted to the CAD or US dollars. But it was a different time and different place, with different cost of living structure. The pilots were respected and doing well within the society. Better than today, being it here in Canada or over there.

It seems wages used to be high for pilots here. Now they seem low compared to some other careers. I think every job has lost respect. Society in north america only cares about wealth.

Maybe it was mentioned before but obviously fluent Russian -- what do you think they speak on the radio in country - very little English used domestically in a most countries unless it's part of their "official" language list or they don't have any "locals" flying their airplanes.

I will continue to enjoy this discussion,
But it is better to know and experience the places and speak from that.
That is very true. Also my experiences in a place probably won't even be the same as another person. I Was on a holiday in a very rural part of south west France once, enjoying myself very much. It was a drizzly sunday in february and we stopped at a small glider strip. I went into the club house were the members were having lunch, coffee, wine and coversation, one of the locals wondered why I would go there for a vacation. I told him I was there for the country side, food and wonderful people.

He thought I was crazy, he's right but there are lots of interesting castle ruins there also.

Simply very few people can afford flying. Much less than in Canada, I believe.

Life in Russia is cheaper than in Canada. So, Russian Pilots have big salaries. If you want to become a pilot in Russia, you have to study 5 years in University! Students learn English (because if you want to find jop, you should know 4 lvl English IKAO (but it is minimum!)).
Many boys can't enter to University because they don't have perfect health.
90% of students got free education.

P.S. Canadians drink more alcohol than the Russian. :D

Oh man! I hope your joking, I almost choked I was laughing so hard when I read this. (On my beer)
According to multiple sources, Russian drink, per capita, about 19 liters of pure alcohol a year. Canadians drink less than half that, at about 7. That's spread over the whole pop., not just adults.

Personally I think we're obviously losing, and am doing my part to get our average up. :)
