Apparently it was a small plane....either a cessna push-pull or a lake. Northstar Air was just behind the aircraft coming in as well and reportedly saw the crash. The pilot was having difficulty with English through a very heavy French accent.

Speculation is a private aircraft not from the area, possibly hunters flying in. More to come soon.

Terrible news. The Globe and Mail is reporting "The plane, a privately registered Lake Renegade seaplane, had recently been sold and was being flown to its new owner when it crashed".

Well at least the media got it right about calling it Northwestern On. and not Northern On
but they messed up about referring to a control twr at YPL.

While I agree the media gets a shocking amount of facts wrong, they were only quoting the TSB in this instance.

Since there is a surviving witness I'm hoping they might actually be able to get to the bottom of this one.

TSB CADORS 2012O3071

The privately-operated Lake 250 Renegade aircraft (C-GZLC) was on a VFR flight from The Pas Airport (CYQD) to Pickle Lake Airport (CYPL). NAV CANADA staff at Thunder Bay F.S.S. reported that the pilot called them requesting the airport advisory service at 0017Z (when the aircraft was inbound to Pickle Lake Airport). The pilot reported that the aircraft was on final for runway 27 at 0028Z. Thunder Bay F.S.S. staff attempted to contact the pilot at 0031Z but no further transmissions were received. The pilot/flight crew of the previous landing aircraft reported no sign of C-GZLC on the apron. An ELT report in the vicinity of Pickle Lake Airport was received shortly thereafter. J.R.C.C. Trenton staff, CACO Duty Officer and T.S.B. Duty Investigator were all contacted. At 0830Z, J.R.C.C. Trenton staff advised that the crash site had been located 1.8 miles east (51º26'N 090º11'W) of the Pickle Lake Airport. Four (4) P.O.B., one (1) survivor. Local police were in attendance at the scene. The T.S.B. have dispatched two (2) investigators to the scene.

UPDATE Supplemental information received from J.R.C.C. Trenton [2012/10/17]: C-GZLC called on final for runway in Pickle Lake. Aircraft did not arrive at airport. Aircraft was observed in steep descent prior to runway. ELT signal picked up in area. Trenton Hercules and Griffon tasked. Hercules located the crash site and SAR Techs parachuted in. 4 persons onboard, one survived and was transported to a Winnipeg Hospital by the Hercules. CASE IN PROGRESS HERC 327 424 - 0.0, GRIF 419 424 - 0.0, OPP Pickle Lake Land Unit

Image
C-GZLC 1989 Lake 250 Renegade aircraft had a VG kit installed, and around 1000 hours, engine 460 hours.

Read the report, there is no mention of a control tower in YPL, FSS is not ATC.
It's all those little details that add up to a factual report. Sloppy reports or sloppy flying often can lead to some nasty consequences.
