Camping in Killarney
I want to pitch a tent at the airport for some camping next weekend. Thoughts? Advice?
She’s built like a Steakhouse, but she handles like a Bistro.

Niss,
I know this area very well. You should be aware that the dump is on the other side of the runway. Once the dump closes the bears tend to wander about and you will get a visit from a few of them. There was a guy based out of OBO a few years back that had the same idea, and him and his wife ended up spending the night in the their plane.( Cessna 150 and he didn't have a night rating) The bears pretty much trashed the tent and everything in their campsite. Apparently it was the longest flight of his life as he flew and she nattered away at him all the way home.
Good luck and let us know how it works out.

How safe so you think they were? And how tough do you think your little Cherokee is?

Not as tough as I am. I once ripped a grizzly apart with my bare hands. The MNR says I have to carry bear spray into the bush now for the Bears own protection.5x5 wrote:Remember this - Bear Attacks PlaneJungle Jim wrote:him and his wife ended up spending the night in the their plane.

MNR - those are the same people that recently populated Ontario with the fisher, right?

In that case I highly reccomend you use a mixture of codliver oil and honey as a repellent. Bears hate that stuff. Wipe your airplane down with it too, its great at keeping bugs off it. Should you still be worried about you hurting the bears you should liberally place fish heads and beaver guts around the perimeter to ward them off.niss wrote:Not as tough as I am. Niss. Just make sure you aren't anywhere near any public schools or children unless you want to be seen on Dateline NBC with Chris Hansen.Hedley wrote:Niss says:Nah - too easy.I want to pitch a tent

Been there, done that.
+1 fish & chips.
Call the Killarney Mountain Lodge and get a ride to town (if needed) and stay there. Or hop up to Agnew Lake Lodge, camp or rent a boat and camp up the lake. They used to have an airstrip there (looks like its still there - call) Or better yet, fly floats and camp the back country.

Make sure your going to the right Killarney..I operate the Killarney Muni airport in Manitoba and recieve about 50 calls a year from pilots wanting Killarney Ont airport....had one today wanting to come for fish and chips....these people are operating aircraft and don't even know how to operate a phone. Pilots read the small print! And no we don't have deice equipment...or ILS...or fish and chips! We do on the other hand offer great hospitality and a free breakfast to any Ontario pilots that fly this far on August 1st our annual fly-In day!

It's amazing how some people get their pilot's licences.
