A passenger jet has crashed after taking a hard landing at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport, witnesses say. Two people were killed and at least three others were taken to hospital in a critical condition, says Russia’s Interior Ministry.
The plane may have been carrying at least 8 passengers and 4 crew. It was flying in from Pardubice, the Czech Republic. The airport's press service says that all the people onboard were the crew.
Preliminary reports say the jet, which belongs to Russian low-cost airline Red Wings, crashed after taking a second landing attempt. It rolled out from the runway into Kievskoye Highway, fell into pieces and caught fire. The plane broke into three big parts, reports RIA Novosti quoting sources. The incident took place at around 16:35 local time (12:35 GMT).
Firefighters and rescuers work on the ground. The circumstances of the incident are being clarified. Earlier, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry confirmed that the plane had to make a forced landing.
Part of the crashed Tupolev-204 has blocked the highway; a traffic jam is developing at the scene. Vnukovo-bound flights are getting diverted to Sheremetyevo Airport.
Red Wings is a Russian airline that specializes in charter flights to Russia and Europe. In 2012 the company began to operate regular flights throughout Russia. The company is the largest buyer of Russian-made Tu-204 airplanes.
Red Wings is owned by the Russian tycoon Alexander Lebedev. In November 2012, a company leasing planes to Red Wings filed eight lawsuits demanding some $65 million in debts. However, it was reported that lawsuits were just a formal procedure and the dispute between the two companies would be resolved out of court

A second landing attempt.
Внуково has two 10,000 ft runways, which is 5 times the normal landing distance.
Here we go again, a splash and crash at the far end of the runway.
This time however we know it was a 90 degree Crosswind gusting to 32 Kts
on a runway, If I read correctly, had thin covering of ice.

Check out the code at the end of the TAF.
It had been snowing prior to the accident and there was a significant cross wind with gusts up to 29 knots.
Runway 24 was closed since 19 December according to an airport Notam: "A5127/12 - RWY 06/24 CLSD FOR TKOF AND LDG OF ALL TYPES ACFT. 19 DEC 06:30 2012 UNTIL 31 MAR 23:59 2013. CREATED: 19 DEC 07:46 2012"

Are you suggesting that landing should be attempted by normal skill-level pilots in optimal non-emergency conditions with this aircraft at any number below its 190 000 lb max ldg wt on a 2000 ft runway?oldsault7 wrote:Notice the common denominator?

I'm not arguing they should have landed on that runway in those conditions, am just interested in that particular statement.
Also of interest from the AvHerald article is the statement:
Sometimes poor decisions are aggravated by bad luck. And I hasten to add that a properly executed approach and landing on that runway even under those conditions should be safely achievable with functioning reversers and no functioning brakes at all.Avherald.com wrote:On Dec 29th 2012 it became known after another TU-204 overran the runway at Moscow Vnukovo, see Accident: Red Wings T204 at Moscow on Dec 29th 2012, overran runway on landing, that on Dec 28th Rosaviatsia had alerted the aircraft manufacturer Tupolev of a brakes malfunction as cause of the overrun at Novosibirsk. In a letter dated Dec 24th 2012 Rosaviatsia demanded with reference to this overrun that all operators of Tupolev TU-204 should perform an extra lubrication to grease the drive mechanism limit switches that are crimped onto the main landing shock absorber before next departure.
Re: Russian TU-204 (similar B757) over run onto Moscow highw
That advisory the day before, is a hell of a coincidence.
My view is that Russian Culture like western, will try to blame it on
something other than the crew.
Both these Russian Pilots had a hell of a lot of experience,
most probably ex-military, and are generally very highly skilled.
I've been a passenger on several flights in and out of Moscow
and always in winter.
What I saw was careful deicing, lots of it, I was impressed.
The dash cam shows one hell of a speed , and I see the description
"overshooting the runway"
One thing is that the Russian Government will demand immediate answers
and we can expect to hear the results in days, not years.

Accident: Red Wings T204 at Moscow on Dec 29th 2012, overran runway on landing
By Simon Hradecky, created Saturday, Dec 29th 2012 16:55Z, last updated Sunday, Dec 30th 2012 00:05Z
A Red Wings Tupolev TU-204, registration RA-64047 performing a positioning flight WZ-9268 from Pardubice (Czech Republic) to Moscow Vnukovo (Russia) with 8 crew, landed on Vnukovo's runway 19 at 16:29L (12:29Z) but overran the end of the runway, broke through the localizer antenna, the airport perimeter fence, broke up and came to a stop on elevated highway M3 about 400 meters/1200 feet past the runway end. 4 crew were killed, 4 crew were taken to hospitals with serious injuries.
Russia's Ministry of Interior reported two occupants were killed, three were taken to hospitals with serious injuries.
Russia's Emergency Ministry reported captain, first officer, flight engineer and one flight attendant died, the other four flight attendants on board of the aircraft received serious injuries including traumatic brain injuries.
The airport reported the aerodrome was closed until 18:35L (14:35Z) but then was able to resume operation.
Russia's MAK have opened an investigation confirming RA-64047 was involved.
The airline reported the captain had more than 14,500 hours of total experience with more than 3,000 hours on type, the aircraft had accumulated 8,500 flight hours. Both flight data and cockpit voice recorder were recovered.
Radar data show the aircraft was on its first approach to Vnukovo contradicting Russian press reports that the aircraft was on its second approach to Vnukovo after some problem during the first approach.
Two more Red Wings Tupolev TU-204s were involved in runway overruns since Nov 5th 2012, see Incident: Red Wings T204 at Novosibirsk on Dec 20th 2012, runway excursion on landing and Incident: Red Wings T204 at Ekaterinburg on Nov 5th 2012, overran runway on landing. On Dec 28th Rosviatsia alerted Tupolev, the aircraft manufacturer, about a brakes malfunction that was identified as cause of the overrun in Novosibirsk.

As much as I read these reports daily, it is gut wrenching to see a video like this and know people lost lives. RIP...
Bad B Russian TU-204 Vnukovo
Russian investigators say a defective brakes and possibly a failure of thrust reverses may be to blame.
"According to preliminary data, the pilots used all the brake systems available on the plane,"
"Most likely, the cause was defective reverse engines or brakes."
Red Wings owner Alexander Lebedev says
the jet had recently passed a meticulous check.
"Plane number 47 had accumulated 8,500 flight hours and underwent its last serious check on November 23," he tweeted.
He also suggested that traffic controllers' initial refusal to authorise landing - requiring the plane to complete several circles over Vnukovo - may have been a contributing factor.
"All machinery has its limits, even when it is new," Mr Lebedev wrote.
But Russian media says the authorities had concerns about the Tu-204 jet's ability to stop in various weather conditions even before Saturday's crash landing.
They cited a letter sent by the state aviation watchdog Rosaviatsya to the jet's maker on Friday, asking about an incident last week in which the engines failed to fire into reverse on landing.
The manoeuvre is required for the plane to slow down quickly upon touchdown.
The russianplanes.net aviation website says the very same jet suffered an engine failure and was forced to make an emergency landing in June 2009.

Re: Russian TU-204 (similar B757) over run onto Moscow highw
However with only about 40 TU-204's flying, and Red Wings making up a quarter of the fleet - with 3 Red Wing over runs in the last 60 days alone - wouldn't inspire too many Russians to board one.
I'm sure the CVR will be leaked shortly (being Russia), however by the speed of the aircraft post runway - seems clear the thrusters were not deployed. Again by the speed, the squat sensors on the main landing gear, appear not to have allowed the deployment of thrusters!
Empty aircraft, will be interesting to see their landing speed, and where they touched down - the Russian Ministry is already saying 'crew error'.
My friends parents just drove from Siberia to Moscow, and flew on a foreign carrier - that is how little faith Russians have in their airlines.
Side note - video online of crash scene, deceased crew on freeway and the cars are still driving around him - wtf. Flight attendant being removed unconscious, bleeding from a head wound, and they don't even stabilize her - just pick her up and carry her. Only one attendant was seen conscious. Note I did not post link.

Empty aircraft,
Thanks Bizjets, nice to see observation.
IF the crew were tired, used to full loads, they may have added a gust factor and ended up
way too fast and as bizjet's observed, the squat sensors could have been why the thrust
reversers did not deploy.
The Airport did a runway surface check 15 minutes before the accident.
The crash of RA-64011 at Domodedova showed a horrible list
of crew failures that resulted in criminal charges against the crew. Then there was the Omsk accident.
Then a brake failure at Tolmachevo Airport.
Red Wings has had a tragic start.
Re: Russian TU-204 (similar B757) over run onto Moscow highw
First, you are likely kidding about the "5 times the normal landing distance" for this type aircraft. Especially in the given weather conditions.oldsault7 wrote: Внуково has two 10,000 ft runways, which is 5 times the normal landing distance.
Second, if you double checked the information about runways, or at least looked at NOTAM's, you would find out, that one runway has been closed since April 2011, and the second is partially blocked due to the maintenance.
In other words, there is only one active runway available in UUWW and it's just 2030 m long (6600 feet).
Third, runway friction was determined as .63 just before the accident. That means, it was good enough and crew probably didn't find any weighty reasons for changing the airport.
So the only question - WHY this flight was still on schedule, when it was supposed to be suspended due to the previous Red Wings overrun incidents?

It was on a positioning flight, with crew only on board, not a scheduled flight. Not sure. This aircraft was carrying passengers the same day morning exposing them to risk (http://jorjolimited.wordpress.com/tag/vnukovo/). So, again - why?YYZSaabGuy wrote:It was on a positioning flight, with crew only on board, not a scheduled flight. To make things clear.
The very first attempt to suspend Red Wings license was made in April, 2012 due to the airworthiness issues. They continue to fly.
The second attempt – after recent overrun incident in Novosibirsk just a half year ago. The technical problem with the braking system was discovered and appropriate advisory issued. They continue to fly.
Eventually, all their operations has been stopped after Vnukovo crash. Eight victims were needed, though
Re: Russian TU-204 (similar B757) over run onto Moscow highw
During the past 8 years, I flew as a passenger, a lot with Russian crews and planes. All my flights to Canada have been with Aeroflot, and TransAero. Most other flights with Uzbek Airways. This is in addition to the monthly flights here in Af, on MI-8s and An-26s, 72s, Yak-40s, or Il 124. I was always impressed by the competence of the crews, and the maintainers.
My guest is that Red Wings were negligent, and tried to save money by skimping on maintenance.
I really only had one bad day...
