Wasn't taken that way at all... IIRC, I had a bit of a chuckle over it.

Re: Pet Peeves
Shrug, where there is no law mandating that slower traffic has to stay in the right lane, it's just fun to drive at the speed limit in the left lane. I mean really, why should I drive in the right lane if there is no legal requirement to do so? Courtesy? pfffffft.

What is the max speed limit on the hwy in the left lane?? Its 100km /hr is it not ?FlyGy wrote:Shrug, where there is no law mandating that slower traffic has to stay in the right lane, it's just fun to drive at the speed limit in the left lane. Re: Pet Peeves

That being said, pretty poor form to sit in the left lane at/below the speed limit, impeding the progress of others.

Section 147 HTA
"147. (1) Any vehicle travelling upon a roadway at less than the normal speed of traffic at that time and place shall, where practicable, be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic or as close as practicable to the right hand curb or edge of the roadway. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 147 (1).
Exception
(2) Subsection (1) does not apply to a driver of a,
(a) vehicle while overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction;
(b) vehicle while preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway; or
(c) road service vehicle. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 147 (2)"

Re: Pet Peeves
Like I said in my original post. Ontario may have this law, but not everywhere does. Besides, your quote doesn't specify divided highways, just highways in general and would be interpreted to mean slow moving vehicles such as tractors. Not cars travelling the speed limit.old_man wrote:FlyGy wrote:Shrug, where there is no law mandating that slower traffic has to stay in the right lane, it's just fun to drive at the speed limit in the left lane. Re: Pet Peeves
FlyGy, you're dead wrong. And doing this is a dangerous practice. Unfortunately here in Ontario it is legal to undertake (pass on the right)
Ontario HTA: 132. (1) No motor vehicle shall be driven on a highway at such a slow rate of speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic thereon except when the slow rate of speed is necessary for safe operation having regard to all the circumstances. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 132 (1).
Note, NO reference to the speed limit (despite the bad grammar of the law).

Yes, you are. (See above)

And, while I have the stage........PP#3:
Why are some of the newer cars designed with auto headlight systems that DO NOT ACTIVATE THE REAR LIGHTS ????? There are many bozos out there who think their lights are on (presumably b/c their dash is all lit up) and have NO tail lights.
Lots of fun on the 401 following a black SUV at night with no tail lights; sometimes they're invisible. Turm on your lights, people!! What ever happened to common sense driving??
PP#4: some car headlight systems have units with the turn indicators integrated. When coming at you, makes it almost impossible to tell if they're turning or not.

Re: Pet Peeves
The trolls are eating heartily today (while in the left lane).

Re: Pet Peeves
That is your opinion, but in the eyes of the law, I am dead right, by your own admission. If I am doing the speed limit and I am impeding traffic, then it is those behind me that I am preventing from breaking the law. If they want to break the law and exceed the speed limit, let them, but I'm not going to do anything to make it easier for them and inconvenient for me.ogopogo wrote:FlyGy, you're dead wrong.

You're wrong! You are not allowed to hold up the NORMAL flow of traffic. Period. There is NO reference to speed ( or "rate of speed"-- which is actually incorrect, but another story)FlyGy wrote:That is your opinion, but in the eyes of the law, I am dead right, by your own admission. If you are one of these guys who park themselves out there in the passing lane, you deserve a spanking.
Oh yes, two more things......there are signs on the highway that read:
KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS
and
SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT
Anyway, end of rant.

What is quite clear here is that the laws vary from province to province. In Alberta and BC I do know it is illegal to drive in the Left lane, yet Saskatchewan permits it. What you guys need to do is make sure that you are EDUCATED TO THE LAWS applicable to where you're driving, because saying "Well, that's how it's done in Ontario.", isn't going to be a very good defense in Manitoba. BTW, there are none of those signs on divided provincial highways in Sask. City streets I've seen them, but not on highways.
Re: Pet Peeves
Absolutely agree no reference to speed limit . That is because the law is covering all roads of various speeds. The road itself is posted ie 100 km /hr which means that 100km is the max you can drive even when passing someone.ogopogo wrote:FlyGy, you're dead wrong. And doing this is a dangerous practice. Yes, you are. (See above)
Next time you get a speeding ticket for going over 100km/hr try saying to the cop " well I drive 130km /hr is the fast lane all the time so why are you giving me a ticket
Nowhere does the law say you can exceed the posted speed limits in order to pass someone . Posted speed limits are the reasonable or normal speed limits mentioned in Ontario HTA: 132. (1)
This law is written so that people are not doing 40-50 km on a Hwy etc . 130 km/h is not "a reasonable speed" on a posted 100km/h road.

Re: Pet Peeves
When there's a passing lane and the Bozo in the passing lane pulls up beside you and won't let you merge back in as the passing lane ends. In every Highway Code in Canada the car on the right has the right of way. At least in Newfoundland they paint on the pavement yield to the car on the right in the passing lane.
Re:
Actually it is legal in AlbertaBeefitarian wrote:As is passing on the right but you'd never know by observation. I don't even think many police officers know.In Alberta and BC I do know it is illegal to drive in the Left lane.
Overtaking and passing on the right
22(1) A person driving a vehicle may drive the vehicle so as to overtake and pass on the right of another vehicle
(a) when the vehicle being overtaken is making a left turn or the person driving the overtaken vehicle has signalled that person’s intention to make a left turn, or
(b) in the case of a one-way highway, where the roadway
(i) is of sufficient width for 2 or more lines of moving vehicles, and
(ii) is free from obstructions.
(2) Where a highway has 2 or more traffic lanes on the same side of the centre line for vehicles travelling in the same direction, a person driving a vehicle that is
(a) overtaking another vehicle travelling in the same direction may pass on the right or left of the other vehicle if there is a traffic lane available for passing to the right or the left of the traffic lane being used by the vehicle being overtaken, or
(b) being overtaken by another vehicle travelling in the same direction shall keep the vehicle being overtaken in the traffic lane in which that person is driving so as to allow the overtaking vehicle free passage in the traffic lane to the right or the left of the traffic lane in which the vehicle being overtaken is travelling.
Restrictions on overtaking and passing
23 Notwithstanding anything in this Regulation, a person driving
a vehicle shall not drive the vehicle so as to overtake and pass or attempt to overtake or to pass another vehicle
(a) by driving off the roadway,
(b) by driving in a parking lane, or
(c) when the act of overtaking and passing cannot be made safely.
Re: Pet Peeves
Hmm, thanks Lurch, I coulda swore I saw "Slower traffic keep right" signs in Alberta. I was clearly mistaken.
Makes ya wonder what else I was wrong about....huh?

Well I didn't post anything stating it you were rightFlyGy wrote:Hmm, thanks Lurch, I coulda swore I saw "Slower traffic keep right" signs in Alberta. I was clearly mistaken.

There are "Slower traffic keep right" and "Keep right except to pass" signs on Alberta highways. Unfortunately I have been unable to find any law that makes them enforceable. I have a severe hatred of anybody driving in the left lane no matter what speed they are driving.
Now to put this back on topic Aviation wise so this thread doesn't get locked.
My PP's are:
When ATC says "Squawk Ident", and the pilot responds "Squawking" or even worse "There's the Ident"
And when pilots change frequencies and don't monitor before checking in, I'm so sick of everybody stepping on each other. The offenders aren't just your newbies either but I hear WJ And AC pilots doing this all of the time.
