Accommodations for Jan 28 GS
Hi everyone,
As mentioned in the subject line, I'm looking for a place to stay while I'm in YYC for GS. I'd also be interested in a car rental. Any ideas? I've searched this forum, and the only lead I had no longer rents his room/car out. Thanks!

Wouldn't WS cover that for you? Or do they give you some $$ I you cancel the booking?
Re: Accommodations for Jan 28 GS
No, the "owners" would never extend that courtesy to a new-hire, they expect everyone to live in yyc within minutes of being hired.126.75 wrote:Wouldn't WS cover that for you?
Re: Accommodations for Jan 28 GS
Don, I think the owners are spending more on the fuel burn to bring the AC, jazz and your sorry a$$ pilots back and forth to work with unlimited jumpseat and giving passes to them new hires right out of the chute. The budget simply isn't there for hotels. I dunno. Something to ponder I guess
Remind me again why they can't fly when they are hired on our own AC metal? It's not like we are two separate companies!

Ok, how about this then:
Should they? Why/why not?126.75 wrote:Wouldn't WS cover that for you?

Re: Accommodations for Jan 28 GS
Sigh. I don't even know why I'm replying because this is just going to turn into another typical Avcanada mudslinging thread. No, WJ does not pay your entitled ass for your accommodation while doing training. Why not? Well, because it's in Calgary and you're based in Calgary. That is your home whether you live there or not. It's not like it comes as a surprise either. Everyone applying at WJ knows Calgary is the base. They tell you before and during the interview that Calgary is your base and that accom is not provided while training. You don't have to apply and you don't have to take the job if that bothers you so much.
Everyone sits in the pool and then has at least 4 weeks notice before GS starts. So it's not like you don't have time to plan. Generally, from the time you get the "yes" phone call until you start GS is at least 2 months. Plenty of time to figure out if you're moving to Calgary or dealing with the extra time and expense of commuting. Not that you wouldn't have thought about this already.
I chose the commute because that is my personal choice, but I didn't get all whiny about the accommodation. That comes with the territory of commuting.
And before you say well AC provides a place to stay during training, when you start initial training at AC you haven't received a base yet, so they kind of have to don't they?
Soooooo, the initial question was if anyone can help the OP with a place to stay for the GS. Either answer his question or go do something else. If it bothers you so much, don't work at WJ and, better yet, don't surf the WJ forum on Avcanada.
Thank you, rant over

No bus fare, your thumb will so just fine

Re: Accommodations for Jan 28 GS
Should they, I think so, initial training on a new type and possibly first jet, in a new environment can be a little bit stressful, add into it having to locate and pay for your own accomodations for at least 2 months or moving during your training to avoid this, shameful.Should they? Why/why not?
People have said alot of bad things about Jazz but they don't skimp on training, my initial sim partner drew YVR base in orientation week, lived in YVR and the intial training was all in YVR. He was provided with a hotel and full per diems even though his apartment was just a 10 min drive from the sim building. He tried to stay at home but that wasn't conducive to quality study time, so he came back to the hotel.
On the other side, I had a westjetter during his intial training staying at the flop house I was at, not only was it an inconvenience for the other commuters because he was there every day, it was in his words, a huge distraction, not to mention expensive. I have heard of some staying at hotels because most flop houses I know of don't wan't people there during training and some won't have a pilot on reserve because they are always there which defeats the transitory nature of flopping down for the night.
As to the why, well I think one word could sum it up, "owner" why else would you subsidize the bottom line with low first year pay and no accomodations for training, gotta have some skin in the game I guess...debate or just flame away
Re: Accommodations for Jan 28 GS
I totally agree! If someone went through Jazz's ground school program and had ever complained about hotel and per diem provisions, as well driving 'students' around to get their Transport's ID clearance as well to a uniform outlet store (btw. all on company's time) is one big spoiled child!mbav8r wrote:Quote:

I won't get in this discussion why WJ does not...you decide for your self.
Re: Accommodations for Jan 28 GS
and this my friends is just one more reason why Jazz isn’t growing and Sky regional is. Hey mig, how come Jazz guys have to commute on WS again for the first how many months? why is that? The last I heard Calgary is where the job and training is so why wouldn’t you just move there? just sayin’ lol. Flyer...any answer to this? lol...

AC dictates 6 months of service before pass eligibility begins. Priority has also changed for a large number of Jazz employees and all new hires making it extremely difficult for pass travel. Also, J/S travel on Westjet and Porter is considerably cheaper.

Re: Accommodations for Jan 28 GS
New hires need 6 months of service to be able to use passes. It got changed from a year ago or so. And yes, there are now 3 (it's ridiculous) employee tiers at Jazz
All these changes are mandated by AC and Jazz being just one of it's partners is subjected to these rules. Seniority at Sky regional is even more ridiculous. I believe they are "Tier 4" with respect to travel priority....don't take my word for it though.
But more the the point...what's all this has to do with WJ not providing accommodation and meals to new hires??????????? Did I say anywhere that WJ is a bad place to work? I wish WJ did, but it's not a reason why someone should not go work there
Btw. Yes, passes are more pricier on AC/Jazz lately, but the travel program that AC offers to employees and family/friends is superior to any airline in Canada. Even to many international carriers...

Dont like it......Don't apply for @#$! sakes. Get over it!
Re: Accommodations for Jan 28 GS
So I take it no one has a place for me to stay....
Re: Accommodations for Jan 28 GS
Don,
You don't get it. With Jazz and AC you don't know where you will be based. Wj has one base so the job is out of yyc. So move to yyc. Sheesh. Thank god wj gives our guys passes right away so they can get home while they have time off during training ( usually away from their homes)
Do you get that? Maybe examine your own shop hypocrite.

Squid,
Not only is it passes right out of the box but I believe it is confirmed travel home during training.
