Flight Training with a DUI Conviction
Hey there folks,
I already have my Private License, and I am just about to continue my Commercial which is 3/4 of the way done after taking a two year break. Unfortunately last year in May I was convicted for driving under the influence. I plead guilty right away. There are several check boxes on the form in which contain Motor vehicle, vessel, railroad, and aircraft.
The only box that is checked off is motor vehicle and the rest are blank including aircraft. I am just wondering if I can still fly with a DUI or not. My dad's saying I should be able to since aircraft has not been checked off but I am not 100% sure. I'm hoping I can because my PPL expires in May of 2014 and I really don't want to spend another 15 grand to get it back.
Thanks folks! Cheers!
Joe

I don't know about the DUI but your PPL will not expire. Your license booklet will expire and at that point you will just have to fill out the paperwork and pay the fee to get a new one.

Oh ok, thanks. I'll have to check with TC about it. Did not know about that though, was just really worried that I would have to redo everything if my license expired.

You're fine. The license suspension box for airplane wasn't checked. The other motor vehicle licenses other that automobile are only checked if there are some crazy extenuating circumstances, usually involving the other type of vehicle.
And no, your license does not expire, you only lose currency and recency. You'll probably remember once you start hitting the books again.
Are you getting a commercial license in order to work as a pilot? If so you will likely want to get a pardon (if you have a clean record otherwise) 3 years after conviction, to eliminate the criminal record altogether.

Ya, I've never been in trouble before so I think I'll be alright. Still it's not good though. I've started ground school again for my Commercial as I haven't flown in so long so it's a bit of a refresher. First step is getting the written done then I'll be hitting the skies again. Not too far off from being done just need to get the important stuff done first lol.
The DUI is the only thing on my record although it's something I wish was not on my record. It's a summary conviction so I believe it's 3-5 years for a pardon. Won't ever be making that mistake again in fact I have stopped drinking all together, over 2 months sober which is great.

Re: Flight Training with a DUI Conviction
why to drink and drive when you can smoke and fly
on a serious note , no you are fine but it reflects on your personality , just get it removed if you want to get into commercial

I wonder drink and drive is quiet dangerous as compare with smoke and fly. People can bear smoke and fly easily but drink and drive is not taken by the people easily....

As DanWEC says, you're good to go. License doesn't expire, make sure you get a new one if booklet did expire though. Medical should obviously be valid, and recency/currency will be valid once you go up on your next dual flight which will be your next flight anyways, no need going up solo unless you know what you need to work on (FTU in-house currency rules probably are lapsed anyways).
I can think of one person with a driver's license suspension and DUIs, but that still have valid pilot license. It's actually more common than you'd think.
Get 'er done bud!
