I started working as a casual in the transportation industry 15 years ago. It wasn't going very well, so I went to flight school. Now I fly as my 2nd job, because there are very few aviation jobs that would pay me as well as that one does now. Never burn bridges!!

While I will agree with the comment regarding thread drift on Colonel Sanders, I also completely agree with his statements, and nearly all of them in nearly every thread and post.
He sounds like a guy who gets it, no one will do it for you, you have to make it yourself. Help along the way can sometimes be essential to success but that is not luck and no one is going to get help unless your seen as willing to put that hard work in to deserve the help.

And to address the threads actual question, commercial construction.

182-SS, read Outliers. It delves into this issue with some very thorough and convincing research, including on persons such as Bill Gates.

Ok Here comes the thread drift again lol sorry.

So I take it you didn’t really read my post… I stated that help along the way can be essential to success…..is this not one of Gladwells theories? And I do state it as his theories as they are just his opinions.

The hard work I mentioned….how is that different than Gladwell’s 10,000 hour rule? Is the 10,000 hour rule not one of his main points?

One of Gladwells essential comparisons is of Lagan and Oppenheimer, two geniuses that had far different life outcomes. But Gladwells argument is merely stating that it was easier for Oppenheimer to achieve such success…. Had Lagan had the drive to do great things a man of his intelligence would have been able to think of a way to do it, and that’s where the hard work an perseverance come in.

Opportunity is huge, as I said, help along the way can be essential to success but as I and so many others who have achieved success will state the hard work and perseverance is the real reason and key to success.

Help from others can be the difference for many people. He refuses to admit that some people really do it on their own. But I suppose some one like him would call a bank loan to start your business that you turn into a success help from other people even though it is at interest and it was you that took the initiative to get it, start your business and pay it back with hard work and perseverance. Someone “GAVE” you the money, or taught you this skill (like a teacher? Lol) therefor his theory HAS TO BE RIGHT! Hard to argue with someone like that eh.

His book seem like he is just bitter that so many successful people aren’t spending their lives thanking others for success. He oversimplifies everything and refuses to give credit where it is due.

I would absolutely debate how thorough and convincing his research is, as did many critics and successful individuals. Being good at arguing does not make you right unless you are actually right.

You're right 182-SS, I did misunderstand what you were saying, but that's because
I also completely agree with his statements
and
Help along the way can sometimes be essential to success
are contradicting statements.

If you re-read CS's posts, you will note that he thoroughly believes that hard work and ability are the sole reasons for success. No doubt hard work and ability play a huge role, but you would be very closed minded to believe that other factors don't play a key role themselves. For example, the pilot/doctor/engineer, the discussion of whom which started his tangent, must have had huge financial support in order to complete all that he achieved. Obviously hard work and ability was a huge part of this person's success, however, he also got a great deal of support which very few are afforded.

Government loans…….student loans…..grants…….Bank Loans…..

A good friend of mine is in his residency to becoming a (sorry I’ll have to ask his specific designation) traumatic optical surgeon in an emergency room. He comes from nothing, he worked at the grocery store, he got accepted into med school, had no money to pay so he got student loans, and a bank loan, the bank looked at his grades and gave him 100,000$ line of credit total. I sh*t you not. SO, is that help along the way…..yes it is I guess it is…..did he do it himself with hard work an perseverance? YOUR GOD DAMN RIGHT HE DID! Sorry that was for dramatic effect lol.

So I guess he owes his success and thanks to the bank and to all of us for funding his student loans.
So help along the way is not a contradicting statement.

Gladwell is laughing all the way to the bank because he wrote a bestselling book preaching to the non hard working (or with no perseverance as this is essential to have both) that you cant make it without help and that’s the reason you haven’t made it yet. Pretty nice to hear that from someone eh…..You could have made it and should have but no one helped you and you didn’t have money. The man is keeping you down.
Gladwell had some great points but his argument skills are superior to his facts.

And while CS may have simplified it, Hard work and perseverance are the true keys and he is right by saying this. Without these two traits no amount of help or money will get you success……well maybe a very large amount of money, hahaha lol

I’d like to see you tell the pilot/doctor/engineer to his face that it wasn’t hard work and perseverance that got him there and he should go read that book……it was pure magic right.

Frosty, you haven’t stated what you do outside of flying…….

I never said it was. What I meant by my comment was that you stating that you agree with CS, while also stating that help along the way can sometimes be essential to success, which are contradicting statements. Do you believe success is driven by hard work and ability only, and that outside influences do not come into play, or not?
I’d like to see you tell the pilot/doctor/engineer to his face that it wasn’t hard work and perseverance that got him there and he should go read that book……it was pure magic right.
I couldn't because I don't believe that's the case, and nowhere in my post did I indicate to the contrary. I can assure you I know very well how difficult it is to get into medical school. The point I was trying to make with the pilot/doctor/engineer was that even with his hard word and perseverance, it would be very close-minded to not realize that he had external influences which helped him. I understand your friend worked hard and got into medical school from nothing, but I can't buy the idea that this pilot/doctor/engineer paid for all that on his own without any external influences. Not to mention the fact that medical school is almost luck of the draw sometimes, with the statistics of students admitted being very close to those who weren't, further prove my point. Was the student with a 4.0GPA and 36Q on the MCAT, who wasn't accepted to medical school, just not hard enough working?(note: this happens regularly by-the-way)
Frosty, you haven’t stated what you do outside of flying
Not sure the relevancy of this question, but may I point out that you haven't either.

You really don’t read the posts before you comment.

I say external factors can be essential to success

But I also say that the Hard work and perseverance is the true secret or Key.

Not contradictory, and even if it was, it is true. Life is not black and white.

I stated that I do commercial construction.

The question of what you do is relevant because the original question asks you that and you have not ever answered. One of your first posts states your are going to but you don’t.
I have this feeling that you don’t or don’t want to say……..or maybe your just here to argue.

No more arguing from me.

I got sucked into this because you thought you could call me out on something but you couldn’t. Neither you nor your book focus on the real reasons for success. Without help success is much harder to obtain but without hard work and perseverance it is nearly impossible.

I’m done on this thread, it has crept waaayyy to far and you and I are the only ones on it still with everyone else either laughing or hating the AVCANADA argument syndrome. Really I should have PM’d you my response so it didn’t ruin this thread, SORRY EVERYONE!!!

met a guy who was flying a caravan for one of the cargo contracts who worked a second job while at his first job. he would do the milk run outbound in the morning, work a short shift at home depot instead of staring at the walls in the hotel, then the milk run back down to base.

LAX

For the job search I would say find something that you would like... I mean flying CAN'T be the only thing you like or are interested in...

This is probly not gonna be your main job so might as well find something that you would enjoy.

You like to work with your hands: construction
You like computer go for it...
You like dealing with people: go for a part time sales jobs...
Well you get the point.

When I was in between job I worked for a fews months as an overhead crane mechanics. It was in my field of interest (mechanics, hands workings, electricity). I realy enjoyed that job and I got to learn a whole bunch of new stuff. I learned welding, I worked on company trucks/ equipement, I learned to operate a forklift, crane. I got to visit a bunch of different industries.

Anyway just try to find something that you would like...

Ha and talk to your friends maybe someone has something for you.
