Four dead in southwestern Manitoba Plane crash- C-210 Feb 10
A father and his two sons, along with another young boy, were killed in a plane crash near their home community of Waskada on Sunday evening.
It's believed all three boys were younger than 12 years old, said two residents of the community in southwestern Manitoba.
RCMP have confirmed there were fatalities but would not say how many were on board the Cessna plane until next of kin were notified.
The plane was found about 7 p.m. with the help of Canadian Forces search and rescue technicians, according to RCMP from the Killarney detachment.
Police are currently at the scene and are investigating with the help of the Transportation Safety Board and the RCMP forensics unit.
Late Sunday night, Waskada Mayor Gary Williams said news of the horrific crash was just beginning to spread.
"It's going to be tough," he said. "It's Sunday night, but once Monday comes and people start their normal day, their normal routines, it's going to be a real shock.
"(The boys) went to a small school, and every kid sees the other kids every day," he said, adding the family is well known in the community.
The crash scene is about 10 kilometres north of Waskada. The town is located about 300 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg near the Saskatchewan and North Dakota borders.

Global Winnipeg News
MANITOBA – A plane crash on Sunday near Waskada, Man., killed three children and the pilot, the village’s mayor says.
“We have a school of about 100 students and you know, three of them are gone,” Mayor Gary Williams said. “So yeah, it’s going to be a very difficult time. They’re the best of friends, and neighbours of everyone in town, basically.
The pilot was an experienced operator of a family-owned crop-dusting business, Williams said, though he wouldn’t provide names because he’s not certain all next of kin have been notified.
“As far as I know, they were just going to be taking a recreational flight,” Williams said.
Killarney RCMP were notified of the overdue Cessna plane at about 6 p.m. Sunday and started a search with the help of Canadian Forces Search and Rescue Technicians.
The plane was found at about 7 p.m. north of Waskada, which is south of Brandon near the Saskatchewan border.
RCMP, including the RCMP forensic identification section, and the Transportation Safety Board are investigating at the crash site.
Police would only confirm there were fatalities, saying they were still in the process of notifying next of kin.

Not posting the pilots name/company but aircraft is a 1963 Cessna 210C registered Virden Manitoba.
Re: Four dead in southwestern Manitoba Plane crash- C-172 Fe
That's really heartbreaking
Re: Four dead in southwestern Manitoba Plane crash- C-172 Fe
TAF 1hr before he took off was predicting "1/2SM FZFG OVC002", with METAR "3/4SM -SN BR BKN006". METAR at takeoff was "1 1/2SM -SN BR DRSN OVC006".
Now that is the weather at his destination. He only actually got 15 mins away from Waskada before he crashed. Still, it seems a very odd decision to take off with kids in the back on a VFR flight when the weather is so crappy.

I guess it is OK to speculate on the cause on this thread, unlike the other most recent crash, that required another thread.CpnCrunch wrote:TAF 1hr before he took off was predicting 1/2SM FZFG, becoming "5SM -SN BR OVC008" by 1900/2100Z. However the METAR shows that it was still "1/2SM -SN" after 2100.
Probably a good reminder (as if we needed one) that you can't always trust the weather forecast when it says it's going to improve.

Double standard from the mods..
Just sayin....
RIP - You will be missed by all in our small community.

That wasn't speculation, it was factual information (apart from the last sentence, which was my opinion rather than speculation). The mods are free to edit it out or move it if they like.

Re: Four dead in southwestern Manitoba Plane crash- C-172 Fe
Sad event.
http://news.nationalpost.com/2013/02/11 ... ane-crash/Peter Hildebrand, regional manager for the Transportation Safety Board, said it wasn’t yet clear why the plane crashed.
The aircraft was so severely damaged that investigators couldn’t determine if its landing gear was down, he said.
Investigators were looking into both the mechanics of the plane and the weather. Hildebrand said there were low clouds, some fog and snow.
Re: Four dead in southwestern Manitoba Plane crash- C-172 Fe
That's so sad!
And actually, I can't believe somebody could take off in this kind of weather for the recreational flight (or I don't want to?). It simply gets in conflict with a common sense!
But... “There’s no question. It’s not pilot error. It’s got to be mechanical,” said Linto, who stressed that his friend always put safety first. It's hard to believe too, when wx are that much marginal.
My condolences to the families.

One of our fellow aviators is dead..And so are three children.
Do you guys really nead to post all this crap about weather at this point, and your opinions? I realize that the twitter generation does not want any thought to pop into their mind that they dont want to share with the world, but this is not the time.. Do you really need the mods to have to tell us what common sense and common decency aught to?

Re: Four dead in southwestern Manitoba Plane crash- C-172 Fe
It seems ok because we didn't know this poor man or his kids while we all knew JC in one form or fashion. Let's show some tact and please delay the armchair sh!t for a few days? Maybe it's time we start looking at adding this to a code of conduct? If not to show some professionalism at least out of respect for a father and his kids.
Truely sad indeed.

Re: Four dead in southwestern Manitoba Plane crash- C-172 Fe
As I pointed out above, the weather is a matter of fact (not armchair speculation). New thread started to discuss weather related accidents in general and why it's so important that we do speculate.
Re: Four dead in southwestern Manitoba Plane crash- C-172 Fe
I think this issue about the weather needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. If you have an emotional tie to the families then feel free to look away but it appears that a very poor decision was made by the pilot that resulted in this crash.
As we enter another icing season it's worth getting the message out. Don't take chances with the weather. And that's a good message to discuss regardless of the eventual "official" cause.

Our heartfelt condolences to the Spence family and the town of Waskada.
Our paths crossed with Ed about 30 years ago, Darren was just a young boy.
Everyone's nightmare,. . . especially family's with small aviation businesses.
Let us all take the time to remember the fallen; the time for questions and speculation naturally comes thereafter.

Re: Four dead in southwestern Manitoba Plane crash- C-172 Fe
TSB says C 210???
Re: Four dead in southwestern Manitoba Plane crash- C-172 Fe
Yes they do. Probably because that's what it was, a 1963 210C. Do you not agree?howard40 wrote:TSB says C 210???

Re: Four dead in southwestern Manitoba Plane crash- C-210 Fe
Aircraft was originally reported as a Cessna 172, however aircraft was C-FWUX C210C Centurion.
Re: Four dead in southwestern Manitoba Plane crash- C-210 Fe
Here a SPECULATION from the CPA forum:
"[The pilot] was a crop duster and was used to low level airwork. The terrain between his departure and destination was flat. He probably did such low level flying in marginal conditions in the past. This time as he was flying low he lost the horizon and either tried to correct or was so low he couldnt get back on the instruments before running into the ground. The pictures show an airplane that looks like it skidded in. The deceleration could have killed the occupants."

Re: Four dead in southwestern Manitoba Plane crash- C-210 Fe
IMHO that doesn't look like an airplane that "skidded in".
Re: Four dead in southwestern Manitoba Plane crash- C-210 Fe
No, it doesn't. There is a large deformation downwards of the roof on the right side above the back two seats. And the wing appears to be torn right off. I can't think of what would cause that deformation.CID wrote:IMHO that doesn't look like an airplane that "skidded in".
Unusual for sure.
