Watched the latest episode on Wednesday night...
I realize the show wouldn't have been as dramatic, but perhaps if Buffalo had planned a stop in EGPC (Wick, Scotland) they wouldn't have had to worry so damn much about the headwinds, the icing or their fuel. They had an additional option to make that leg a lot safer, and they chose to take the riskier route to make the show more interesting. They could have also waited it out a day or two in Iceland for the winds to die down a little. Poor decision making on everyone's part, especially since they didn't have the Turkey landing permission sorted out yet anyway.

Re: Ice Pilots Started
I don't know what kinds of facilities are available, but geographically the Faeroes are in a nearly ideal position for aircraft travelling between Iceland and Scotland to stop over. If the winds, ice and short range of the 215s all combined to create a potential disaster, why didn't the crews make an extra stop to be safe? I suspect there was never any real danger, and that the situation was embellished by the producers to make it seem like they were on the verge of plunging into the ocean, when they probably landed with their entire reserve still available.
Re: Ice Pilots Started
Don't forget the scripted dialogue to add to the drama.

I wonder if the British rock guy paid for his rides and the fuel.

Kind of... The two CL-215s that campaigned in Turkey are safely ensconced at Bruce's FBO in Wales for the winter.oldyellr wrote:I wonder if the British rock guy paid for his rides and the fuel.

My favorite part was the close up of the C-46 with someone's old gloves as pitot covers.

Re: Ice Pilots Started
A friend of mine once stated that his goal in aviation was to do jobs that made his friends envious. Some of the stuff that Buffalo does fits that to a 'T'.
I was thinking, over the last few episodes, that Mikey was looking a little thinner. 100lbs?!!
That's some solid work.
Odd to hear that Bruce Dickinson had never been in a float plane, despite being a huge aviation buff.
Looking forward to next season!

You can do floatplane training at Loch Lomond:

Last time I visited I saw them doing touch+gos. Pretty nice place to do it.

Re: Ice Pilots Started
We are pretty restricted in the UK for float flying, and today's price is pretty standard across the few operators/providers:
http://www.ontrackaviation.com/sep-sea-rating.html
http://www.cambrian-aero.co.uk/seaplane_training.html
http://www.the-amphib-flyingclub.co.uk/ ... -tafc.html
Scotland is much, much easier in terms of 'permission' to use inland water; England much more restrictive. Don't know about Northern Ireland. Scotland (where I fly) is pretty much like BC in miniature - very miniature. I looked into UK training and decided to go to Canada for mine. Conversion to JAR (hence EASA) very straightforward provided the temporary airman's certificate hadn't expired. The exam's all about bouyage, lights, right-of-way, etc.
One commercial operator too

These "reality" shows have a lot staged... I had just landed in Miami and was getting out of the airplane when the gate attendant came up to us with a camera man and started yapping about the "emergency" we had on board with some passenger (we had none).. When we didn't play along she just stopped and the camera man put down his camera... There was no emergency of course.. This was for the Airport reality show.... How much is staged on "Ass Pilots" I can just imagine...

Is the season over now? They've been airing repeats for the past two weeks.
