Snowbird personnel records.

Post by SeptRepair »

Not sure where to post this, so I will try here and see what happens.
In 1974 at the Calgary Stampede they had a display where Kids could sit in a Snowbird. I was one such kid and my mother took a picture of me and one of the pilots. The caption on the back of the photo says "Captain Phil 1974 Calgary Stampede" Does anyone know how I could find out who this fellow may have been? Any help would be appreciated.

G'day septRepair

It is quite possible that the signature you have is from a Public Affairs Officer. If it had been a Snowbird pilot (in this case, definately not), he would have put his position number i.e.Joe Smith, Snowbird 5 etc. I will be talkng to former Snowbird Boss Dan Dempsey on Wednesday night after he returns home. I'll post his reply.

Cheers...Chris

They were back a few years ago and my daughter and I sat in a partial display plane. Great times. They must take it to events all around the country still.

I suspect it may have just been a guy with the services assisting for the day. I will scan the photo when I get a chance, and let others decide what rank the fellow may have been. He has 2 gold bars on the left upper shoulder area. In the end it doesnt really matter, I thought it neat that my parents took the time out when i was 5 to get a pic of me in a snowbird and all these years later I'm neck deep in aviation. It would just be nice to put a name to the face of the guy who introduced me to aircraft.

Smiling here. My first thought...Ok so a creepy guy was luring kids, with airplanes. Kind of a like a those creepy Mall Santas?
Parents, don't let kids talk to strangers even if they have planes or cars.

When I read the title "Snow personnel records" I assumed this would be about how the records were put on a thumb drive and lost by a government employee!

On a more serious note, the Snowbirds kick ass and are an awesome Canadian icon. Lets just hope we still have them around in the years to come.

Ok, this thread IS about the Snowbirds, and how it sparked one of us to get involved in aviation; it IS NOT about the Blue Angels, Hells Angels or Guardian Angels; Thunderbirds, Gooney Birds, Goldbergs, Weinbergs or icebergs; Iraniraqafghanipakistan; F101,2,3,4 or 14,15,16,18......

Thanks. :)

G'day

I just got off the phone with Dan and he said if you can post the picture he will look at it and see if it is someone he knows. He said it was definately not a Snowbird pilot or groundcrew you had your picture taken with. My guess the guy was a PAFFO.

Cheers...Chris

G'day

Awwwwwwwwwww why such the long face?

Your mystery man is definately not aircrew. Looks like he signed out a flying suit from Clothing Stores in the Supply Section and slipped on his rank for the occsssion. He has no other distinguishable markings.

I have forwarded the photo to Dan Dempsey. Perhaps he can shed a little light on this guy.

Now for a shamless plug on behalf of the Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association. Dan Dempsey will be the guest speaker at C.H.A.A.'s annual banquet on the 20th of April, 2013. It will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion branch in Woodstock, Ontario

Gentlemen:

Thanks for your query. The officer in question is Capt Phil Anido, a public relations officer at the time in the Canadian Forces. Phil is an excellent PR man and did a lot of this sort of thing during his military career. For clarification, exhibits like this are normally manned by public relations personnel as Snowbird personnel will be deployed on the airshow circuit from May through October. Hope this helps.

Wow either this place is wise magic or we have some pretty awesome well timed monkey accounts.

Remember that other thread when someone posted about Lynn Garrison and he showed up that was cool too.

Someone get Bob Hoover and . Yeager in here, I'd like to chat with them too.

G'day Dan

Holy shit, so that's Phil?

That was my first thought but then I said no because of him being a Captain at the time the photo was taken. When I first met Phil in 1993, he was the PAFFO with Air Transport Group H.Q. at Trenton. He was also a Lieutenant Commander which as you know is a Navy rank. Turns out Phil switched over to the Navy back in the 1980's. He is retired and currently living in Ottawa. I will be talking to him tonight.

Cheers...Chris

Hi Dan: Here is a pic of some inspired by your book "A Tradition of Excellence". It has taken two Firsts in the collection category.

Best Regards
