It sure looks like a nice plane, but is it not just a 737 replacement? The 37 is the best selling jet in the world and also one of the most reliable and proven airliners ever built. Airbus also makes some great planes this size that are reliable and well proven. Why would an airline risk buying a new design from a small company (compared to Airbus and Boeing) instead of buying the proven, tested, supported and reliable airplane?

What does bombardier have against the window opening? It gets awfully hot in the greenhouse before the APU starts cooling it down.

It is nice to see some Canadian entrepreneurship again. It is very nice to see that we are poking our nose once again into an area where we once excelled. Especially before the Russians, Chinese, Japanese, Indians and Koreans... :smt040
Thanks for the great pics biz!

Good looking jet.

Hopefully it'll be a big seller for Bombardier.

Keep in mind that Canada was, at one time, the leader in jet transports with the A.V.Roe Canada C-102 Jet Liner. It flew for the first time on 10 August 1949 and in July 1950 flew the first Jet airmail into New York City.

The USAF was so impressed with its performance that the service wanted to buy them as high altitude long range navigation trainers. And that crazy texan Howie Whatzisname wanted to buy the Jetliner for his airline.

The Jetliner could have been a success had it not been for the problems with the new CF-100 all weather interceptor, which in the end resulted in C.D.Howe, Minister of everything ordering the shut-down of the Jetliner.

This was all it took for the Brits to take the lead in the jet transport field followed closely by Boeing with their 707.

If you want a good lesson in Canadian Aviation history look for a book "The AVRoe Canada C-102 Jetliner" by Jim Floyd

It's a real shame we never got the Avon engines for the Jetliner. After the Soviets got power for their Mig-15 from what amounted to be a commercially acquired and reverse-engineered Rolls Royce Nene, the Avon was put on the restricted list. Instead of two modern axial flow Avons, four thirsty centrifugal flow Derwents were installed, cutting range in half. By the time the Avons were available again for planes like the Sud Caravelle and Comet 4, the Jetliner was long gone.

However, even without the Jetliner we have made our mark with the Dash-7, Dash-8, and CRJs. Hopefully we can catch up to the Brazillians with the CSeries and become a leader in regional aircraft again.

Another great read is a book called Shutting Down the National Dream by Greig Stewart. It's the Arrow story but as I recall it has as much Jetliner and CF100 juice in it as the Arrow. Enough to make you shake your head in disbelief.

That C Series is a nice looking machine. Here's hoping the timing is right for it and they don't have any big "Boeing issues".

The claim is the CSeries is 15 to 20% lower operating cost than competing aircraft in the 100-149 seat range. Bombardier has a lot of experience with airliners and they have the capability to do this. If the numbers are real, it will be very competitive if not a game changer in the 100-130 seat market. There are a lot of Boeing 737-200/500 and some Airbus 318/319, that are coming up for replacement. They could also give both Boeing and Airbus serious competition in in the 130+ seat range.

Yup... those Short Buses and smaller 37s (except the 200) are carrying around a lot of excess weight for commonality with their larger brethren. The 757 had the same problem... every one that left Renton did so with the long legs and beefed up structure required for the handful of -300s they sold.

That was one of the reasons why Boeing went with the 717... but except for the engines, it basically was a DC-9-20 straight out of the mid-60s, wing and all.

AVRO C102 only one aircraft was completed, which was donated to The National Research Council - they didn't have room for it, so they chopped off the cockpit which is in our Canadian Aviation Museum in Ottawa, the rest of the aircraft, plus the 2nd aircraft that was almost complete - were scrapped.

Here she is at Howard Huges Culver City Airport (just north of LAX) - Huges wanted to buy 30 of them, AVRO didn't have the ability at the time to build 30, so Huges had it flown out to California were Convair was going to build them - but AVRO's C.D. Howe blocked it, to focus on the CF-100's, and Orenda Turbojet engines.

Bizjet101: A slight correction C.D.Howe was the Minister of Defence Production in charge of military procurement and not the head of A.V.Roe Canadal Fred Smye was the President and General Manager with Crawford Gordon as Chairman of the Board.

Hopefully Bombardier can make their new jetliner a success and once again give us something the cheer for.

Biz jet, I may be wrong but when I saw the engine on tests, it was in the #2 engine spot and the fan had the same size as the 3 others. I think the one on the extra mount is for the 320ng.
