Class 2 Instructor Ride

Post by Flips »

Hi all,

I've just started preparing for my class 2 instructor ride, and was wondering if anyone has any tips or advice. It's been a while since I have done an instructor flight test. I've read the guides from Transport Canada, but was just wondering what experiences others have had.

Thanks

It's all in the flight test guide.

As a prospective class 2 instructor, you should
deliver some pretty polished PGI. You should
be very developmental, drawing much of the
material out of the student and frequently
confirming student comprehension during the
PGI with questions. You cannot be an output
only device, like a new class 4.

It goes without saying that you should deliver
a solid TKT, and also a good motivation as
to why the student should learn this exercise.

If you get to the airplane, you've got it made.
The flying part is not hard, at least not for an
instructor with 10 flight test recommends and
over 500 hours of dual given.

The examiner will expect to see a pretty good
demonstration from you - with you talking all
the time while you are flying, and maintaining
situational awareness - and he will play the
student, and expect you to point out his major
error and tell him how to correct it.

Of course, you can expect some questions
about your new privileges and responsibilities
at an FTU as a supervising (class 2/1) instructor,
but all that stuff is in the CARs, and you should
be very familiar with it, because you as a class
4/3 instructor have been supervised by a class
2/1 up to this point. Should not be new to you.

You cannot be an output only device
Can I post the parachute PGI? Huh? Can I?

An oldie but a goodie ...

A little SBT for you. Watch the first minute of this clip:

Now, let's look at "Performance Criteria" for PGI in TP5537E:

http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/p ... y-4282.htm
Performance Criteria

Assessment will be based on the candidate's ability to apply the instructional techniques and learning factors set out in the Flight Instructor Guide, including the ability to:

1.prepare the teaching area for effective student learning (readiness);
2.prepare/check training aids;
3.determine that the student is ready for learning;
4.explain where the lesson fits into the overall picture (relationship, readiness);
5.identify the main teaching points (readiness);
6.relate the lesson to past and/or future experiences of the student (relationship);
7.start presentation of new material at the student’s level of understanding (readiness, relationship, effect);
8.proceed at the rate of student comprehension (relationship, exercise, primacy, effect);
9.use developmental teaching (exercise, effect, relationship);
10.introduce each stage of the lesson and provide a link between stages (relationship);
11.obtain student feedback throughout the lesson (exercise, effect);
12.respond to student feedback (effect);
13.identify and emphasize major points for the student (exercise, effect);
14.give clear explanations (primacy, effect, relationship);
15.use visual aids effectively (effect, intensity);
16.use voice effectively by varying rate, volume and pitch (intensity);
17.appear enthusiastic about the subject being taught (intensity);
18.use eye contact effectively (intensity);
19.involve the student effectively;
20.confirm student learning at the end of each stage.
How did our parachute PGI measure up?

Now that you suffered through the worst PGI in the
world, as a little reward here is a fantasy flight in a
cosmetically distressed 172 with Truman Sparks:

I've been told this is the most failed ride. Reason being that we know you better be good at PGI and teaching air exercises by this point; but few people think about how they will supervise others. So, expect the examiner to focus on your supervision skills. The Class 2 will allow you to be a CFI even if you're not planning on doing that so you need plan to answer questions about how you would maintain operational control, how you would supervise instructors working under you, when you will do supervisory flights, and so on. The scenario for the flight itself will be something along the lines of the primary instructor is sick / away on vacation / etc so you will do a supervisory flight with the student. Therefore, you may PGI a new topic, but be sure on the flight to not just teach the new lesson, but do a few other exercise to see where the student is at, how their instructor is doing, etc.

this is the most failed ride
Really? Wow. I would have guessed the initial
class 4, or perhaps the initial class 1.

Class 2 was probably the easiest test I ever did,
but I admit it was a long time ago - mid 90's. Maybe
things have changed since then, but I found it a
very pleasant experience. The DOT examiner back
then in the Ottawa area had a real reputation as a
fire-breathing dragon but I found that if you studied
ahead of time and knew your stuff before you showed
up, the ride would go well. I did many rides with him,
both instructor and instrument. Back in the 90's there
were no delegates for either instructor or instrument
flight tests - that was heresy! Would never happen!

Back on topic ... as far as the supervision goes - I
thought that was kind of obvious, because that's the
difference between a class 3 and a class 2. It's all in
the CARs. I won't post any links, because if you're
a senior class 3 instructor and you can't find stuff
the CARs by now, you've got bigger problems.

With respect to the flight test guide, and assessment
of a class 2 instructor:

http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/p ... 2-4270.htm
Class 2— Aeroplane, Helicopter
Supervisory Knowledge:
a. Demonstrates an understanding of the responsibilities of a Chief Flight Instructor;
b. Demonstrates administrative knowledge appropriate for the supervision of a staff of instructors;
c. Demonstrates a satisfactory knowledge and understanding of the regulatory requirements for direct supervision of Class 4 Flight Instructors.
Again, I don't know what's so tricky here. Again,
I would hope that a senior class 3 instructor can
find and read the appropriate flight test guide.

And it's not like he's any stranger to the process of
instructor supervision - as a class 4 instructor he
spent at least 100 hrs at an FTU being supervised!

If you can't figure out the supervision thing in 100
hours, well ...

Thanks guys for the tips and advice. After many weather cancellations I had my ride yesterday, and passed. It was pretty straight forward and now I'm a class 2.

Thanks again.

Congrats! Now whatever you do, don't become a CFI.

Congratulations! If you know your stuff, the
test is really not that bad.
