Re: PRISON ESCAPE IN A R44
How did they smuggle the R44 into the prison?
Lucky for the prisoners that one of them was a
helicopter pilot.

Re: PRISON ESCAPE IN A R44
Sounds like a pretty good plan indeed. 2 guys signin up for a chopper ride at Mt-Tremblant. Once in the air pull out a gun on the head of the poor bastard that was flying and told him to fly toward the prison. The pilot skawk 7700 but the guy on is left smelled a rat while listening the chat the pilot had with Mirabel FSS. He pulled is headset out of his head and that's it. They flew to the prison, got the prisonners, got dropped and the pilot flew back to Tremblant...

Re: PRISON ESCAPE IN A R44
Pilot, two hijackers picking up two prisoners in an R44...........Now that's a load. The media could have reported a 'crash' instead of a prison break if anything went amiss there.
Re: PRISON ESCAPE IN A R44
Nothing new Shamrock?? Maybe not for Ireland. Geesh

Re: PRISON ESCAPE IN A R44
CTV was reporting one of the prisoners was shot in the leg, so the exercise wasn't all bad news.
This isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened around Montreal. It was in the spring of 1975 or 76, we were waiting for takeoff clearance when this guy called on the tower frequency that he'd been hijacked. Two crooks had called the company and booked a chopper ride, then when they were airborne they pulled a gun on the guy and landed in the parking lot at the Place Vertu shopping center. They went inside and robbed the Royal Bank, then came out and took off. They had handcuffed the pilot to the collective or something while they robbed the bank. The poor $%^&* was screaming on the radio, scared shitless.

Re: PRISON ESCAPE IN A R44
Do you understand how lucky that pilot is to be alive right now?
He seen the hijackers faces...and those of the escaped prisoners.
Jokes aside...this dude is so lucky they didn't off him upon landing in Mt-Tremblant. I can't believe the cops are still holding him for questioning. He dialled 7700. I'd be livid if they held me for questioning this long.
Glad it ended all well for him.

Sounds like some type of mission that should be in a GTA game. Glad the pilot is safe though!

Re: PRISON ESCAPE IN A R44
'Twas always my understanding that prison yards had wires stretched across above them to guard against such eventualities? Perhaps Quebec didn't get the memo, or I'm mistaken?
Re: PRISON ESCAPE IN A R44
Hope he can fly again, the PTSD and all.
Yes they could have easily shot him after landed. With this in mind, what if he'd told them while in the air look you kill me you'll likely crash trying to land. Or I drop this thing now killing all 3 of us I dare ya. Assuming they aren't afraid of dying but you are? Make them toss their guns out the door now or you auger it in with all 3 of you. Simple demand. Who blinks first.
Not something anyone is really trained for unless you are a hostage negotiator.
As a precaution let's place all jailed Quebec gang members in solitary confinement 24/7 for while. Collective punishment - no pun. Take away their exercise yard rights.

Hijack You squawk 7500, 7700 is emergency just saying...

There was nothing wrong with what the pilot did. He played it cool, followed their demands and lived.Dash-Ate wrote:Yes they could have easily shot him after landed. This wasn't a 9/11 situation where thousands of innocents could have died. Why antagonize the guys with guns?

Re: PRISON ESCAPE IN A R44
These were not smart criminals. It's hard to sneak a helicopter through Class C airspace if there's any primary radar -- and yes, gliders without transponders get spotted. Looks like he left the transponder on; so, ATC kept the cops updated. Even with the transponder off, helos really show up well on primary.
