So my question is, now that it's about that time to update the logbook for TC...is this an unacceptable practice? I realize I should have just crossed my mistakes out (thanks, for those who would like to point this out to me...

Whiteout in the logbook?
So...a few years ago I stupidly decided it was a good idea to try and make my logbook look more tidy by using white out to fix a mistake-several mistakes actually.
So my question is, now that it's about that time to update the logbook for TC...is this an unacceptable practice? I realize I should have just crossed my mistakes out (thanks, for those who would like to point this out to me...
). Am I totally boned? Do I need to get a new logbook and start over? Or is there a way around that.

Re: Whiteout in the logbook?
I have white out on more than one of the pages of my logbook(s). It never affected my ability to get a rating or higher licence at any point in my career. TC expects a little white out here and there. As long as your time is legit, white out wont be a problem (other than as the Colonel said, you may upset some bureaucrat at TC for 30 secs lol).
Re: Whiteout in the logbook?
I'm doing a court case out in Ontario this year where the guy did about 10 hours of Navajo training with a guy and then when he needed Navajo PIC time, he whited out the flights with the trainer and pilot and him as dual, and switched the column entries. Problem is you can see what was written under the whiteout.flyinthebug wrote:I have white out on more than one of the pages of my logbook(s). Not an issue of pilot time, but one of integrity.

White out in log books!!!Colonel Sanders wrote:I use whiteout. I'm sure some people will

Nah its cool, do whatever you feel. I'm taking more the stance that pilot logbooks are more just works of art anymore. If a pilot somehow managed not to eat his, I think we can call it a win these days.
Journey logs on the other hand...
Re: Whiteout in the logbook?
I have some in mine and at each correction I initialed and put *corrected to show true. TC never said anything when it was submitted for my AA. It's also never been "certified" by any employer, I didn't even know that was a thing people did.
Re: Whiteout in the logbook?
Can we please bring back the "what colour do you use in your logbook" thread? I really missed that one.
Re: Whiteout in the logbook?
You may jest, I've learned this year that according to the DND everything has to be filled out in blue.gustind wrote:Can we please bring back the "what colour do you use in your logbook" thread? I really missed that one.
Re: Whiteout in the logbook?
I own my pilot log book and I use whiteout. I occasionally correct a time or location. If that's a problem for somebody, it's their problem not mine. I like the nice whiteout pens of today they work very well. The old liquid stuff always got me light headed after several changes

Re: Whiteout in the logbook?
Thanks guys! That's relieving to know. I spent a lot of money on my logbook and got my name embossed in and everything. Yea, I know. Im a retard.
Was nervous there for a sec.
P.S. I only use black pen, and only tipped pens that say "pilot" on them.

Re: Whiteout in the logbook?
I believe that's only a BS cadet rule that a clerk in Air Ops made because he couldn't figure out if the paysheet he was processing was a photocopy or original. DND couldn't care less what colour you write in.jump154 wrote:You may jest, I've learned this year that according to the DND everything has to be filled out in blue.gustind wrote:Can we please bring back the "what colour do you use in your logbook" thread? Re: Whiteout in the logbook?
I don't think you'll have a problem. Whiteout is such an obvious thing to spot. i don't think anyone will try to nail you for cooking the books. If you amended numbers etc using a pen of the same colour (for example) that would be another story. Remember the Nation Air debacle. That was a clear example of cooking the books.

If you cease the practice and use the accepted method of hatching the old entry so the mistake is still readable everything should be OK. If TC ever asks, just tell them you realized your mistake and corrected it.
You'd be amazed how understanding they can be if you come clean.

Nope. It's me and whiteout forever, baby.If you cease the practice

Re: Whiteout in the logbook?
As an aside, my PPL and CPL instructor educated me to maintain a pristine logbook. As he said, it shows that you are meticulous, tidy, and that looks good in an interview. I think he made sense. I got in the habit of using separate sheets in CASARA. Then, when the flying is done for the weekend, copy everything neatly into the logbook.

Does CASARA get upset about whiteout in the
logbooks when they are ramping people?

Man I want to know what's behind the blacked out portion of that picture.
Maybe this is why some people get so upset about white out. The insatiable curiosity it creates.

Don't know what got under your skin about CASARA.Colonel Sanders wrote:

We don't ramp check anyone but we do make sure our OWN documents are current and onboard before a CASARA flight.

Re: Whiteout in the logbook?
I don't use whiteout in mine, I don't care what people do in their's
Legal documents may be required to be in blue or black pen and no whiteout. A quick Google search will tell you that is sometimes the case (depending on jurisdiction). I never heard of anyone that had trouble though, it's more of me liking my logbook looking a certain way (read: OCD.) When I instructed I never made my students follow my method.
Love the pic colonel! I'm just imagining someone turning beet red as the pound out a response

Re: Whiteout in the logbook?
I'm not angry, just really confused by your statement implying you actually make a mistake now and then. I had to check my computer clock, my watch and the paper wall calendar to be sure it wasn't tomorrow already.Colonel Sanders wrote:I use whiteout. I'm sure some people will

Re: Whiteout in the logbook?
I've used correction fluid in my personal log since I was a student, as I prefer a clean look to the log... In recent years I've switched to the white-out tape that comes in a little dispenser... No waiting time for it to dry, and I find I can control the application better for a neater appearance.
The intent behind not using it is to avoid people falsifying their logs, of course. I log not only my time, but also the Hobbs start/stop times... If anyone wanted to check, they should be able to cross-check Hobbs times with logged times and if necessary even go back to the aircraft logs. I don't expect this will ever become an issue, however... I may one day get my commercial license, but I don't need to right now as a private pilot.

p1ss people off, is to white out correct entries

Forget about that, what's more embarrassing is the fact he has a shortcut to avcanada on his desktop.costermonger wrote:Man I want to know what's behind the blacked out portion of that picture.
