ISP in Northwest Territories

Post by lokito50 »

Hi gents and ladies,

I was looking into Internet Service Providers in the Northwest Territories since I will be moving there next month and could not find many providers up there. Does anyone know or have an idea of who provides internet service in Fort Smith?
I heard that Northwest Tel is a provider there but their prices are thru the roof. Perhaps that is what Im going to have to deal with, I dont know.
Any comments or feedback is much appreciated.

Thank you

The Matrix is everywhere, and yes it is provided by NWTEL, and yes the prices are outrageous, the only way around it is satellite internet, which is slower and more expensive.

NWTel also doesn't offer any ( that I know of ) unlimited bandwidth packages. Lower end package gets you 5(!!!) gig a month and the high end one gives you 50 Gb. All of the "high speed" ( and I use this term loosely! ) is ADSL, so also requires you to buy a landline from them as well.

That being said, I'm downloading a movie right now and getting 150-200 kB/s, so its not entirely unbearable.

I use the high end package as I download a lot of pornography, I mean aviation safety publications, and all told I pay around 150-180 a month including the landline, internet and a little long distance.

Pretty sure you don't have any other options in Smith if you want " high speed ".

I was impressed that Ft Smith has a KFC, until I tried to order Chicken and was told " we don't offer that, but we have everything else! ". WTF?

It would seem that you're one of the new guys coming up, you've picked an awesome time of year to head up here. NorthwesTel is the only company in Fort Smith to offer internet. For our internet and cable we're paying $170/month total. We have digital cable tv/pvr with a higher-end package and around $83 is for the internet itself. We have the internet package listed on the website for 90Gig (my daughter loves Netflix and Youtube :( ). Be careful how many GB you get a month if you go with a cheaper package, overages are $5/GB.

The ISP is the least of your worries. If you are moving north you will be gouged for everything except mosquito manure. Get used to it. When you return to where you started it will not even phase you to pay stupid amounts for everyday "needs".
