Best Book to Prepare for Float Rating
Im looking for a good book to read up on everything there is to know about float flying before i do my rating.
So far I've found three different books all through ASA:
1) http://www.asa2fly.com/Notes-of-a-Seapl ... duct1.aspx
2) http://www.asa2fly.com/Seaplane-Pilot-P ... duct1.aspx
3) http://www.asa2fly.com/Seaplane-Operati ... duct1.aspx
Can anyone recommend one of these books, or does someone have a recommendation for a better book?

I also recommend "Ditching Principles: Survival Guide to Ditching an Aircraft" by Bry the Dunker Guy under the merch section of his website. It covers off egress procedures, etc.

Re: Best Book to Prepare for Float Rating
I always liked Marin Faure's book: http://www.amazon.ca/Flying-Floatplane- ... 0830601791
A big +1 on the dunker book mentioned above. Also, do yourself a favour, and seek out a 'dunker course' before, during, or shortly after your rating. I've taken Bryan's course several times through different employers, and have always come out of it with something new. http://www.dunkyou.com/index.html
HAve fun! It beats the heck out of just about every other type of commercial flying.

Another +1 for this book, pretty much has all the necessary stuff.cdnpilot77 wrote:How to Fly Floats by JJ Frey

I have another older book which is pretty neat, Water Flying by Franklin T. Kurt.
http://www.amazon.com/Franklin-T.-Kurt/e/B001KCRJEW
Its a bit older (the CL-215 is hailed as new!) but it is more geared towards flying boat characteristics. More historical stuff in it as well.
I also have a copy of TP 5584E Flying With Floats which if you can find it is basically one page everything you need to know about float flying which seems no longer to be in TC's publication inventory. Maybe I'll scan it in and post it here.
edit: Nvm, here it is.
http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/p ... 4-6001.htm
Probably useful when you're starting to have in your pocket to make sure you don't forget anything.
There is of course the Instructor's guide to the Seaplane rating which is free to download.

I like Water Flying Concepts by Dale De Remer:
http://www.seaplanes.org/mambo/index.ph ... 6&Itemid=1
A bit more advanced then the rest.
Agreed on the dunk course. Should be mandatory for a float rating IMHO.

A couple of copies of Maxim are always good to have on board.

+1 for How to Fly Floats. Most aviation stores stock it. I ordered from Hammond and they delivered quickly.
