The theory is that it will act as an alternate for air ambulance flights and other smaller aircraft, but not anything of size...they will still have to use Calgary as an alternate.

From what i've understood from ramblings around the office, that's the plan. The CZVL option is for use as an alternate, really nothing more. As it stands right now, depending on where the flights are coming from, alternates are either Grande Prairie or Calgary. But would also be interesting to see, is what is going to happen when this prospective "Parkland Airport" opens up? the plan is to make it an FBO with full concoction of instrument approaches, including ILS.

Although the present mayor is leading the charge the damage was done years ago by a true NDP mayor. Non other than Jan Reimer. If I remember correctly a plebiscite was held after people who bought homes in the Kingsway area because they were cheaper, bitched and moaned about the noise and she folded like a cheap tent. Closing the Muni is like taking the diamond from a ring. But politicians just can't see value in anything but dollars.

When it comes to plebiscites on YXD the have been only (2) since the Second World War

Both driven by the needs of the International Airport and in both cases Edmonton Regional Airport Authority was a major player as the International needed the commercial service from YXD to continue operating:

1) 1992
It was awkwardly worded but the just of it was an open/close discussion.
Keep it open won at about 55-60% of those that voted.

2) 1995
Yes=No=?
Awkward beyond belief in the votes wording but the just of it:

Vote to maintain YXD as is with scheduled commercial service
or
Vote to maintain YXD as is without scheduled commercial service

Both options clearly retained YXD as an operating airport in perpetuity and great pains were taken to make that fact clear.

77% of those that voted were in favor of removing scheduled service.

Remember both those campaigns very well

In my highly biased personal opinion

azimuthaviation wrote:I have to blame the voters of Edmonton, they should have known better, not as if there was no precedent for this. Mandel announced last week that he would not run for re-election and would return to the private sector. As a property developer. The City Centre Airport and the national heritage within along with the 760 000 residents in Edmonton were secondary concerns to Mandel and his friends business plans. Including of course billionaire Daryl Katz, who is blackmailing the residents of Edmonton that he will move the Oilers to Seattle unless they fork over upwards 500 million dollars to subsidize his arena.

Well the residents of the city paid a huge price for the Mandel era, and now that its over Mandel, Katz, and their business partners are laughing all the way to the synagogue. Sometimes I think how stupid the voters in Edmonton are and think "good for you, thats what you voted for, thats what you deserve", but then I remember CYXD, who served us so well in times of peace and war, where I and so many others found their beginnings in this industry, and built lives around it. Listening to the rhetoric, and hearing it be slandered by someone who only wanted it gone because they wanted to use the land it sits on (why does that sound so familiar?) was infuriating. We owe our heritage more than to let things like what happened to CYXD to happen again.

And add a couple more to that group Montreal mayor MIchael Applebaum arrested on 14 counts of fraud and corruption, of course with his friend Saul Zajdel. The biggest joke is one charge of breach of trust. I wouldnt have trusted either one of those as far as I could throw them. Why some people insist on letting these people loot our wealth and property repeatedly is beyond me. Breach of trust. What a joke.

It's really fustrating/heart-breaking to see such a great little airport essentially "handcuffed" in it's ability to do it's job. City Center airport has sooo much potential to thrive but isn't allowed to.
As long as we can get fuel, we will continue to utilize City Center airport for our medevac services.
