Twin-engine crash near Calgary

Post by Oscar »

CALGARY- Emergency crews from several fire departments rushed to the scene of a plane crash just outside of Calgary on Wednesday afternoon.

The six-seater, twin-engine Cessna went down in an area northeast of Cochrane, around 4 p.m. It landed in an area near Lochend Road and Township Road 262.

Officials initially said three people were on board when the plane crash landed. However, they later realized only one pilot was on-board, and the other people they came across at the scene were bystanders who rushed to help.

The 37-year-old pilot was not injured, but has been taken to hospital by EMS as a precaution.

Crews from Calgary, Rocky View County and Cochrane responded to the scene.

Officials say one engine failed, and the pilot was in communication with the Springbank Airport but did not make it to the tarmac. The pilot managed to pull off a ‘belly landing’ and get out of the plane by himself. Both wings and the tail were broken off.

Investigators with the Transportation Safety Board have been called in.

The lone occupant of a downed twin engine Cessna has walked away from the wreckage unscathed.
The plane crash occurred at approximately 4:15 p.m. at a location near one end of Lochend Rd., outside of the town of Cochrane. The impact of the crash separated the plane’s tail from the body.
Calgary police say the plane experienced double engine failure and HAWCS was the first on scene to assist.
According to Dax Hub, Rocky View County Fire Chief, the pilot successfully navigated an emergency landing, bringing the plane to the ground on its belly and skidding to a stop.
Glad no one was hurt.

It looks like it was a Grumman Cougar based at CYBW (C-GDBD).

Sad, I'm gonna miss her as I logged about 80hrs in the old girl over the last two years.

Aircraft was a Grumman GA-7 Cougar. Pilot was not injured.

Sounds like it was a single engine failure but pilot reportedly was not able to maintain altitude. Forced approach occurred 9.3 NM north of YBW at 1605 MDT.

Typically your single engine service ceiling would be below ground level around the Cochrane area in the Cougar.

If It was the owner of the aircraft flying it, hope he doing alright, Good guy. Yeah, Single engine service cieling on that thing out of the factory is 4980'. Twin engine training needs to change or we'll see more of these types of accidents and maybe not as good an outcome.

Much more greenery on the hills, looks like somewhere farther west, I'd guess Salmon Arm.

I see a lot of that aircraft here in Invermere. Good to hear the pilot is alright... if it is who I think it is he is a really good guy. Airport depicted is most likely Nelson based on the photographer's other work.

It is but your drift down service ceiling is well above ground. I think on a perfect day with half fuel and perfect technique you can get a 200'/min climb in the missed from YBW... That's a lot of perfects in a line...

As for dual engine fail like the poster in that news link suggested it looks to me like the critical engine was set to full coarse and the blade is horizontal. That right engine was definitely spinning on impact. Maybe windmilling, can't tell if the blades bent forward or back...

Good on buddy for walking away. Any landing you can walk away from...

I use to rent DBD to take my family flying every few months. So I asked the owner what happened to her. He told me the pilot ran her out of gas!!

So now I have no plane to rent to take my family up in
As he was offering a sweet deal. But I guess it takes one bad apple to wreak it for the rest of us.

Does aircraft insurance cover running out of fuel?
