Floatplane Down in YRL

Very sketchy reports filtering in on an accident in the Red Lake area. Absolutely NO details, but indications are it may have been a husband and wife. If anybody has any details could they PM me. I will repeat no details. I know quite a few pilots in the area and I'm just looking for information. Hoping for a positive outcome, but everybody's playing it pretty close to the vest.

I heard from 3 people last night they believe it is a Beech 18. I didnt think there were many (any) privately owned -18s left anymore. First thought when i heard it was a 18 was Chimo or Showalter.
My condolences to the friends and family of those lost.

It is a Beech 18 that was being flown by an American Camp Owner and his wife was on board with him. The aircraft used to be commercially operated out of Nestor Falls.

Actually the aircraft was more commonly (and more fondly) known as Whiskey Whiskey Vodka for the many of us who flew her over the years. I last flew that aircraft in Nestor Falls many years ago, and last saw it Yellowknife in 2012 when I incorporated it in my airport static display (at -25C) as part of a community outreach event for Women of Aviation Worldwide Week.

FWWV's one flaw was the cargo door which opened upwards and was held open by a short rod inserted into the door frame. On windy days it was an awful feeling to be precariously balanced on the float/ladder balancing a 100lb (200lbs) bottle of propane and hoping like heck the door wouldn't drop down and decapitate you before you could escape with your load.

If memory serves, that machine had Yellowknife history many years ago, went out East, then found it's way back to YZF and now, it would seem has migrated East again. Sorry hear about its demise.

Aside from the history of WWV can anyone shed light on what happened here? Read on a local news it "blew up in the air" not to start a rumor here cause I myself find it hard to believe. (Or don't want to)

Have to agree. All the pretty pictures are a wee bit irrelevant to the subject at hand. I'm way more interested in what happened to it, than what colour it was in 1973.

You are correct, it did not "blow up in midair"...it was a privately owned beech 18, and from what I've heard it was a husband & wife from the states onboard. OPP recovery team was out this afternoon, so I hope they recovered their bodies so their families can be at peace and have some closer.

Just after take-off its left wing tip clipped the water and cartwheeled her into the lake. As told to me by a person who watched it happen.

When I had my crash in 2008, one of the posters asked "how was the airplane, was it the one they just rebuilt" and I never felt so angry and disrespected in my life. I also dont care what this plane looked like in 1973 or in YZF last year! I care that 2 people tragically lost their lives...and some of you care what colour the plane was? Sharing your stories is fine, just not in a thread where people lost their lives. Wow, something is truly wrong with that way of thinking. The plane crashed and people died...we dont care what the history of the plane is..or at least we shouldnt.

Super tragic that lives of aviators/friends/family/coworkers were lost and some of the posters are simply trying to relate to this tragedy.. in their own way.
