Obtaining a type rating before 1500 hours
G'day folks.
My situation is:
I have 900 hours TT
ATPL's written
18 more months before my ATPL written exams expire (unless I hit 1500TT and the whole recipe before then)
I have been researching AvCanada and the CARs (Lord help me understand the layout of TC's website!) but have not been able to find an answer to my question.
My question:
If I get a type rating before my ATPL exams expire and before I hit 1500TT, does that annul the 2 year expiry rule on the exams and thus "freeze" my exams until I hit the magic recipe (let's say I only hit 1500TT in 4 years from now)?
Several friends have told me that this is so, but I have not been able to find substantial evidence to this end.
If somebody could point me in the right direction (CARs would be great), I would be eternally grateful.
Thanks in advance!

Get the hours. Pretty sure that's the only way.

That is true for your IATRA but do not believe it to be true for the A's. As far as I know the A's are valid for 2 years or until you get the ATPL signed off, whichever comes first.

See CAR 400.03 (2) (b) (i).

the short version is, if it's a airplane that requires 2 crew and you get typed than your a's are good for ever. if the airplane only requires 1 pilot than that type rating doesn't freeze your A's
don't mix up airplanes that are operated 2 crew with those that require 2 crew BE20 type rating will not help

A Dornier 228 type rating will lock in those marks...I believe. (only 9 registered in Canada)

DC3 type rating did it for my AA's. th exams remaind valid after the two year mark.

Re: Obtaining a type rating before 1500 hours
How about if you used up your IATRA to get a PPC on the Dornier and then get upgraded to a DASH-8 before you hit the 750 hr mark. If someone wrote the ATPL exams AFTER the 750 hr mark like in this case, would they still remain valid after the 2 year period ?
Thanks
Thanks
