TC ATPL to FAA ATP conversion and study guide
I know it's been asked before but previous comments seem to be somewhat dated.
Has anyone done this recently, and if so, can you suggest the appropriate study guide and expedient steps to take?

Gleim for sure!
I did it in June and the test was like a walk in the park. The study requires quite some time though! Allow yourself 1 week to 10 days of fairly intensive studying to go over all the topics.
Good luck!

Re: TC ATPL to FAA ATP conversion and study guide
Not sure how this would complicate a conversion, however there are some changes being made to the FAA ATP. Some of the highlights are 50hrs in class (already in effect), after 2014 one will need to pass a 30hr class and log some sim time before taking the written.
Again not sure if this would through a wrench into a conversion, but something to look into.
As for prep, I'd recommend the King program, if you just want to "get er' done" come over and take a 5 day ATP class with ATP (the school) that includes the written.

Supercharged,
I'm pretty sure the OP is referring to the TCCA ATPL to FAA ATP IPL conversion process. He's not talking about the full ATP written exam. He's referring to the TC to FAA conversion exam which is basically a short differences exam.
Cheers,
Chax

As for the conversion process itself if you haven't already done so make sure you start the Letter of Verification process as soon as possible. That's probably the most time consuming part. Once you get that out of the way everything falls into place pretty quickly.

Thanks for all of the responses.
I've sent off to Oklahoma for the letter of verification and signed up for the Gleim course.
Looks all in all like it should be fairly straightforward.
Not sure what I will do with an FAA ATP, but it may open a door down the road.

Re: TC ATPL to FAA ATP conversion and study guide
Hint: DO NOT get a Canadian medical
or in any way alter your Canadian licence
(eg rating) after you request a verification
letter.
If you do, the verification letter is of no value
because it is referring to a licence or medical
that no longer exists.
Ask me how I learned this.
When you get a US medical - for example -
DO NOT get a Canadian medical at the same
time, after you have requested the verification
letter.
Took me THREE YEARS to finally get TC and
the FAA in sync, with my 6 month Canadian
medical, which TC doesn't enter into their
computer until 3 months after the medical.
Ha, ha, ha.
So if you're over 40, you must get a Canadian
Cat 1 medical and then the clock is ticking. You
must pester TC to enter the medical into their
computer so it matches your licence booklet
and ONLY THEN request the verification letter
from OKC and hope it arrives and you can get
to the FAA FSDO before your 6 month medical
expires.
Remember if it takes more than 6 months, you
are screwed, because if you don't renew your
medical, your Canadian licence is no longer valid
(ha ha ha) or if you renew your medical, your
licence/medical is now different from what was
referred to in the verification letter, and you
cannot use that verification letter - you have
to request a new one.
As I said, took me THREE YEARS before I was
finally able to synchronize TC, OKC and my license
booklet and get an appointment at the FSDO with
all those planets aligned.
Oh yeah, you have to do a little written. I think I
took 15 or 20 minutes to write it and got 90%. I'm
not too bright, I'm sure you will write it faster and
get a higher mark than I did.

Would one assume then that this process might be somewhat less arduous if one is under 40, and then just keep stuff up from then on?So if you're over 40,

Re: TC ATPL to FAA ATP conversion and study guide
Correct - under 40, your Cat 1 medical is good
for a year, which doubles the time you have to
get stuff done.

Miffed,
I used these guys for my Canadian INRAT. They have awesome software for the TC to FAA ATPL conversion.

I first used dauntless to convert my TC commercial. I used them for the plethora of CFI's I've done, and plan on doing their mil conversion shortly.Boratt wrote:Miffed,

A huge plus for their stuff.
You can be a cheap ass, and surf the FAA website. They publish all the question and answers, its just a matter of putting them together. This what Dauntless, Gliem and others have done. Hence why you pay them.

I had to do it for the company I work with back and forth across the border on regular basis and never know when you will be operating TC or N reg or training FAA.
The Gleim 50 buck TC to FAA is targeted right out of their big ATP study guide. I did it 3-4 days went and wrote exam in St Hubert (Montreal area). Also wrote the test in about 15 minutes with 95% result not cause of brains cause Gliem gave me all the answers.
LIKE THE COLONEL SAYS ONCE YOU START THE PROCEESS DON'T DO A MEDICAL IT SCREWS EVERYTHING UP THE CHAP I WENT TO THE FAA WITH IN ALBANY NY DID NOT COME AWAY WITH A CERT HAD TO GET A NEW VERIFICATION LETTER THAT MATCHED HIS CANUK LICENCE.
Cheers......Jim

N.B. The answers are re-arranged on the test. If you havewrote the test in about 15 minutes with 95%
a sort-of photographic memory this may screw you up a bit.

Re: TC ATPL to FAA ATP conversion and study guide
Colonel,
do you think it would be a problem with a new sticker being on top of your temp privileges. I've sent my form to Oklahoma, with the scan of my booklet including the pages with my temporary licence (commercial, multi-engine and group 1). My sticker arrived last week so I stuck it on top of the latest temporary licence (which was a group 1). What Oklahoma now has is scan of my temporary lic but now I have an actual sticker in the booklet where the sign offs were.
Much appreciated,
alwayswannafly

Re: TC ATPL to FAA ATP conversion and study guide
I would argue that as long as the actual
licence and ratings were unchanged, the
letter of validation is therefore still applicable.
The sticker is merely cosmetics, IMHO.

Re: TC ATPL to FAA ATP conversion and study guide
Is it true that the FAA ATP never expires? If so it would probably make sense to get it before the new law with the 50 hr course goes in effect..
Re: TC ATPL to FAA ATP conversion and study guide
For the most part. Your "IFR" ticket needs to be current (6-6...). But no check ride required once you posses it. However if you fly under commercial ops. Annual/semi-annual check rides are required.rotateandfly wrote:Is it true that the FAA ATP never expires? Can someone tell me where I can find an exam centre to write this exam? The only one I know of is in St Hubert Que, but that's a bit out of the way for me. Any other places? I'm trying to find a list on the FAA website but not being successful...

Most Canadians live a short distance from the US border.

Colonel, you're saying if I have my letter of verification in hand and afterwards get a new medical certificate that it is no longer valid when I go to my FSDO? That doesn't sound quite right...
& no I do not live super close to the US border. Was hoping to write somewhere here in Canada but it doesn't look like that will happen.
