Air Transat Layoffs

Post by clearmyside »

I heard a few days ago from a buddy of mine, who works at Air Transat, that he just received a layoff notice. He's been with them for over three years and didn't get layed off last time, meaning this time the cuts are deeper.

Unless I missed it: Why is no one talking about this. Especially when Sunwng Airlines is wet leasing 25 aircraft this winter season, bringing way more foreign pilots than they ever deploy to Europe, never mind more than they employ themselves!!!!

Please fill me in, if I'm missing something here.

Cheers

This topic has been discussed at length by insiders in the General Airline Industry comments section.

I would love to see the big unions at AC and Jazz do something about this. Not just worry about their own ass.

While I'm no Sunwing fan I will point out that they are not wet leasing 25 aircraft. I believe the numbers are close to 5 or so birds as they sent 7 over to Europe this summer, though how that all pans out with the CTA ruling on wet leases is beyond me.

Also ts sent out notices but no one has hit the streets yet, so it is unclear as to how many will actually be laid off those who were recalled for the summer last spring were told to expect a layoff for oct 1st, I'll be very surprised if the numbers go beyond that group.....but then again anything is possible in this industry.

Don't be surprised if you see them advertising for pilots in the new year, it's possible they'll need to hire a few courses.....though as always things are tightly molded in jello at TS :)

I suspect the poster is talking about a flight attendant. No pilot here that's been on property for "over 3 years" has received a layoff notice.

Or maybe he meant people in their third year... Most of the people who got the letter have been at TS for over 2 years...

And yes, you can expect to see job ads for new hires at the beginning of 2014. With the addition of 4 x B737 this coming spring the company is already short a few drivers. On top of that, a few guys are looking at leaving the company, some have had interviews at AC and are in line for the coming GS's, some are looking at going overseas. Two months ago one A330 FO decided to go captain at Skyregional...

I saw some Transat planes in the south end of the YYZ field just after, they might have been taxiing.

I don't know where you got your numbers...you should update your infos. This summer a lot of Sunwing pilots went to Europe, we will receive exactly the same number of foreigners, ratio is 1:1.
Furthermore the company recently hired 40 CANADIAN pilots. Most of them were Capt or FO at Jazz and some with 757 experience.

Good news for the TS pilots, layoffs are cancelled and some guys start 737 training in November.
