More Valuable - Float rating/ski exp or Multi-IFR rating?

Post by Alpha_Bravo_Charlie »

Hi all,
As the title states, for a fresh 250hr pilot, what is more valuable in helping you acquire that 'first job'?
I ask this question because I am currently deciding between the Confederation and Sault program. I am aware that there a lot of bush and float operations up north that ideally would like candidates to possess some sort of prior experience, but would it be worth it over a Multi ifr rating?

Thanks for your input!

Well, your question sorta answers itself..

If it's a float outfit, and you have no float time...

Obviously, if you have the money, then do both, if not, then decide where you'd like to start off your career (straight into the ifr world, or into the bush end of things) and make your choices accordingly..

Don't forget to have fun along the way! Good Luck!

Dont forget you may be stuck on the ramp a very long time with low hours and even lower float time. Companies have a hard time insuring a 250 tt pilot with 7 hours on floats.

Consider this: the Sault programme is a full year longer than the Confed programme, so if you are interested in bush/float flying, do the Confed programme, then take the money you would have spent on tuition (never mind living expenses) for your third year at Sault, and get your Multi/IFR at another school. There are some excellent schools for doing just that in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Cornwall, and probably a few others I'm not familiar with.

This is not to discourage you from the Sault programme: I know many graduates who are very happy with their experience there. But from a financial perspective, Confed is the better choice: one less year of tuition, and you're in the workforce a year sooner.

Good luck, regardless of your choice, and you probably should apply to both, in case for whatever reason you don't get accepted into your first choice.
