One student wanted to transfer to another school only to be told "if you want your PTR, that will be $2000.00, CASH"
Hold on a second. That's a clear contravention
of CAR 405.33 which says:
Pilot Training Record
405.33 (2) On request from a trainee receiving training for the purposes referred to in subsection (1), the person responsible for maintaining the trainee's pilot training record shall

(a) certify the accuracy of the entries; and
(b) provide the trainee with the record.
Any students reading this, when your FTU starts
you to jerk you around, go right to TC Enforcement
and let them know about this. TC will come down
like a ton of bricks on any FTU which attempts to
use the PTR to extort money out of a student.

The slimy FTU is betting that you, the student,
don't know the rules. TC has plenty of time and
money to do really stupid things like send CAI's
out to hide behind the hangar and photograph my
family and friends, well, they can goddamned well
phone an FTU which is contravening the regs.

If TC doesn't jump on this, contact your MP and
the Minister of Transport directly.

They will continue to get screwed as long as they keep giving these kinds of shysters money. Spend your money wisely people. Get receipts. My God, especially if you pay cash for anything. Flight training is a lot of money no matter which way you swing it. Shop around. Read the TC literature. If you think you're being screwed, speak up about it.
These schools are being operated by recent newbies to this country but we as Canadians are being blamed. What's next?
We do deserve some of the blame. These guys laugh at how our country runs. Where they come from you get imprisoned and their hands cut off for the types of crimes they commit over here. Here we give them a disapproving frown and say try again. I'm reminded of the truck driving school where the same group of guys run their scam until they were caught in at least 4 different Canadian cities. The paper we use to protect ourselves really just keeps the good people in line. I know of flight schools that smash up airplanes on a regular basis - they keep going because they know how to push paper. Pushing paper is only onerus if you're actually doing the stuff the paper requires like good little boys and girls.

This deserves repeating, and I know from experience that its one thing that TC will actually move on, and quicker than anything else I've ever seen them move on. And that was only because they thought I did this once. As usual, being an evil person, I was of course guilty until proven innocent.

I trained at Empire for my PPL. The group that were there in 2006-07 were great people. I loved the fact that most instructors were trained from day 1 there. They were still students and had crisp minds and most were very good at instructing. I saw my first instructor go on to the military and felt lucky to be trained by her.
The management and staff were doing a great job. The owner probably got a a bucket of money when he sold. I had finished my PPL and would rent a Da-20 every other week and saw the change in staff and thought something bad was happening. I moved to the west coast and watched as it changed to Maylan and spiraled into the ground. Very sad.

I think I was there about the same time as you did your PPL. I would have reccomended Empire to anyone. I was there to attend a seminar bit about training using the G1000. The instructors were knowledgeable and professional, and the one I conned into flying with me was a pretty decent stick. CFI seemed like a pretty good guy, on the ball, lots of good things going on there at the time. I'll confess I did something a bit evil and wasn't forward with the instructor that I flew with at the time, and didn't let on that I had an instructor rating, I wanted the full spiel a PPL holder would get.

Very unfortunate to see what happened. I hope the people that I met there got out before it got bad.
