mcopolo wrote:hey guys,

this thread has been dead for a while. Don't know if you guys could still answer my questions:

1) My average for all my 6 grade 12 courses right now including one M course is at 84.67 (Second sem mid-term included)

so, if you round up, is at 85.

2) Physics 12 is among the 6 courses

but my grade 11 marks are complete crap (40's-50's)...they don't really look at yr grade 11 marks right?...they are only for early acceptance?

I have written the supplementary essay as required...what do they look for in the essay as I know this essay weighs A LOT in deciding the offer...

What are my chances of getting into this program. I know ppl in the 85-90's are getting accepted this year.
Hi there, your average is fine and you will likely get in, although it is close to the cut off. I know some people in the program who got in with lower. Like you said, Grade 11 marks don't mean much except for early acceptance. Good on you for pulling up your marks so much! In the supplementary essay they are looking for passion above all. They want to know that when push comes to shove and things get tough that you're going to have the passion needed to get through. I think depending on how good your essay is and if you keep up your current marks that you have an excellent shot. Are you going for flight or non-flight?

Cheers
Thanks for the fast reply! I am going for the flight option since being a pilot has been my dream job ever since I was a kid.

I have a question that I want to ask for my fd who also applied to the flight program...his 6 grade 12 courses are at 87-88, but he took 4 of the courses in private school (Advanced Functions, Calculus, English, and I think World Issues), would he in anyway have less chance of getting into the program than I? Do western deduct marks for taking courses in private school?
That's great, I'm in the flight option too. The first year sucks because you feel so close yet so far away from flying, but trust me when I say first year goes by in the blink of an eye.
As for your friend, it shouldn't make a difference whether the credits are from a private or public school.

I wish you both lots of luck, PM me when you hear back.

Congratulations on your acceptance.

That would be a question for the UWO admissions department. Give them a call.

No one else is going to say it? OK, I really don't like being the spelling police, but wow. Welcome to University!

+1.. But I'm not surprised since English is only one of the six courses required.

Btw Danial, it's an 80% I believe. See you in Sept.

What's the point of the UWO CAM? If you want to be a pilot.. it's not really for you. Airlines don't give a $hit what degree you have, as long as you have one. The degree just shows them intelligence. I livedin London, ON not too far from UWO. But.. instead of going for this program, I decided to get a BA in Social Science (GIS, Physical Geography) and go to a local flight school. I was thinking of getting my licences and ratings between university years (during April - September) and when I graduate from UWO I will have my flight training completed as well hopefully..at least most of it. I found this way it will cost alot less and is more convenient for me..Who thinks this is a good idea?

May I ask why you chose BA in SS? What was your entrance average?

U of Waterloo has B of Geo plus pilot licenses....why didn't you opt to go that route? Its same as what you are doing now...

All in all its all about preference...what ever works for the individual...and at UWO CAM we teach pilots to see the BIG picture of the aviation industry and how all things come together to make it work....instead of focusing and living in their own little bubble...no offense to anyone of course...

What do others think? Discuss and debate!!!!

I think it's an excellent idea. It's nice to have the freedom and flexibility that a local flight school would be able to provide, as long as you're focused enough to keep up the studying and do your homework without having university-imposed deadlines. The potential to network is also there, which is golden... there are many working pilots who, on their time off, stop by (or rent out of) these flight schools, and you can meet some really interesting folks, especially if you pick up a ramp shift or two. Don't totally dismiss flying throughout the year, either. Way back when, I scheduled my university classes so that I had two afternoons off a week, and managed (even with the awful Calgary winter weather that year!) to get my PPL done in 5 months while maintaining a decent GPA on a full university course load.

Good luck, study that FTGU, ask questions, be educated and make sure your training stays on track, if you don't like your instructor switch it up (you're paying good money for him/her!), do as much x-country time as you can at night once you've got that night rating done, and most of all... have fun.

Chipmunk, thanks for your input.. I completely agree with your opinion on the flight schools. Also, congrats on the 5 month PPL!

Wow! You're an instructor now.. Are you instructing at the school where you did your own training? Btw, what program did you complete in university?

PM on the way, it's a bit of a long story.
Not instructing any longer, that was about 7 years ago, and yes, it was at the school I did my instructor rating at; Still working as a pilot, making a hell of a lot more $$ than I did as an instructor!

I know there hasn't been a post on here for a while but I'm hoping someone out there will be able to help me out. I'm debating between doing the airside program or the ground side program and just getting my flight training through a flight instructor. What would be the best option and what would the cost differences be? I want the get the best education for my money and I'm trying to see all my options. I've also heard about the program through the University of Waterloo. Does anyone know what that one is like compared to Western's?

It's hard to say which has a bigger bang for your buck...

Many factors affect this such as weather, instructor, flight school and personal ability....

By going with western you would be going with a fixed fee cost and going on your own it would be variable...

If you are a strong learner, spend all your free time at the flight school, I'm pretty sure going through your own flight instructor would probably cost less...with that said I would strongly recommend speaking with different flight schools and flight instructors to confirm this.

Only advantage I can see going with airside as oppose to ground side is that you'd be going to ground school and other things with your classmates and in that sense you would have a larger support/resource base if you had any questions or problems...

Last I checked the program with waterloo is a bachelor in geography and pilots licenses...so the main difference would be that at western you'd be learning aviation specific courses (airline management, airport management/planning...etc...) whereas waterloo you'd be learning general geography....pilot licenses would be pretty much the same....

Hopefully that helps answer your questions with a unbiased stand point....let me know if you have any more questions.
