CYXD World Renowned Redevelopment Update

So the land is heavily contaminated, there is no private money behind the development, and the drawings aren't as advertised. Everyone in the Edmonton aviation community saw this one coming.

I'm surprised no Edmontonian has wrote:It's so peaceful.
You can hear the distant gun fire from the gangs much better, now those pesky aero-planes are gone.

Re: CYXD World Renowned Redevelopment Update
I wouldnt expect too much to happen with the land. Most likely grant a portion to NAIT, then parcel off the remaining and sell it to developers to with as they like. This is Edmonton remember. Right across the street from where that picture of garbage island was taken was a train terminal (still is VIA rail) but it used to go all the way to downtown. So many roads were cut off, east-west avenues, forcing motorists and pedestrians alike to detour south or north several blocks to go around the tracks. Fast forward to today, (most of) the tracks have been removed but still every artery is closed to traffic. No one has sought yet to recombine the broken chain of avenues that stretch from where the airport stood to where the track goes east, something like 20 blocks. In addition, nothing has been built on any of the freed up land. A walking path was paved down and theres some dog parks along the route but no structures. This is the same area where the highly sought after, valuable land was being "wasted" and under-utilized for the muni. But an equal area of land in the same area is reserved for people's dogs to shit on. Theres even the bridge over 97 street that the train took still standing. No one sought to remove it, remove the dip at 97th street where traffic goes under. I guess they didnt want to displace the pigeons and hobos who call it home. They did however paint a train on the side of it, as some sort of ridiculous monument to the history of that line.

Maybe years from now someone will paint an airplane on something built where the muni was.

And if it did exist, you wouldn't need a container that large.5x5 wrote:Like unicorns and internet manners, no such thing exists.Cessna driver wrote:Mandel's heart?
Ego of course would be a different story.

Don't go picking on the Bomarc Missile.
It belongs to the Museum and we are trying to do the best we can in very uncertain times to say the least.
Besides...it is the only one in Canada that is owned by Canadians, the others (2) are still on loan from the USAF.

What a shame the way this has all unfolded. An aviation history tragedy in the making.

Re: CYXD World Renowned Redevelopment Update
Sorry Tom. I can't help how that particular piece of Canada's history makes me feel. It is worth remembering lest we (Ottawa) make that same mistake again. I just don't think it's our proudest moment as a nation. Things just as easily could have gone another way and you'd have an Avro Arrow on that pedestal and we'd all beam with pride when we walk by. YXD is a huge loss for Alberta. We will be mourning her passing for a long time.

In all honesty it is not on my top 10 personal list ether, but having it reminds us not to make that mistake (and maybe some others) again.
BTW
If we had an Arrow I certainly wouldn't allow it to be on a stick.

Re: CYXD World Renowned Redevelopment Update
The way I see it, with this "project" obviously headed for scandal and failure combined with the Conservative leadership race and a provincial election that is no more than two years away and could come much sooner there may still be some opportunity to save YXD in some form. Where is my Envision Edmonton shirt?
The urban lawyer faction of the PC's looked headed for a long trip to YOJ and Wildrose will smell blood in the water.
Hell, Edmonton might prove all to happy to have the province expropriate "Blatchford" out from under them.

Re: CYXD World Renowned Redevelopment Update
I had the unfortunate pleasure of spending the last 7hrs in the City of Edmonton's hallowed halls following the full Blatchford discussion.
My reason for being there was simple, whatever they do impacts the museum and its the only way to get information...not fun...but the only way.
1) Yes there are serious issues with the project and it has been sent back to administration to be represented in June with changes to be determined.
2) There is not doubt that Edmonton City Council is determined to implement the redevelopment.
They are not happy (some extremely unhappy), they are bringing in outside experts as advisers and there are problems but they are determined to implement it but not in the form presented.
3) They also made it clear this will be a subsidized project from the start...the question being how much it will be subsidized...not if it will be subsidized.
That's the short form...I now have to go through about 10 pages of notes to create a report for my board.

Re: CYXD World Renowned Redevelopment Update
The understatement of the century.“When you go from a concept plan to the realities of what that might look like, there’s going to be adjustments,” said Councillor Dave Loken.

So the misspelled and overpriced produce of the future may never come to fruition.
Nice choice of words. Oh well, you guys keep voting them in..."Certainly, we’re developing the land, how we’re going to do that and what that’s going to look like is very much up in the air.”

Hmmm, guess the CYXD supporters weren't far off the mark after all? This is a brochure that was distributed last spring as part of the effort to reverse the decision, prior to the final closure last November.

Anyone that flew out of/worked at/had anything to do with YXD knew this was going to happen. Its amazing how stupid the general public is and believes whatever someone with power says. Supporters of YXD said from the begining it will never turn out how the city says it will

You might think from the hundreds of previous examples that people would quit banking on these Shylocks. Yet each time they are still surprised when they lose a pound of flesh.
