AME insurance

Post by Sam.Cha »

Hello , I am an aircraft maintenance technician and I have my M1 license. I have a lot of friends that asks me if I could do their annual inspection on their private plane. I always said no, but I 'm very interested . I would like to make one or two annual in my summer, but I have questions about insurance responsibilities . I have a colleague who advised me to not do this , because the insurance was too expensive and without insurance and someone can bring you in justice and you can lose everything. I know there are a lot of AME who did annual, but they all tell me they did not have insurance and do not know if they were protected. I would like to know if there is a way to to clear me of responsibilities or to be assured cheap . I do not know WHERE i can ask my question, is not the department of TC and insurers want to sold you an insurance.

I work really well and I thrust in my work, but we are never too safe .

Thank you very much for your time

Samuel

Sam I have been looking into doing the same.

I've gotten a quote from Magnus who offer this insurance. There is three parts to the insurance. One is hangar keeper, meaning you get damage inside the hangar, run over an aileron with mule… sort of thing.

The main part is product liability. It's a 1,000 bucks. If you had two customers you could say, right off the start your annual is $500 plus my time at X amount per hour. That would cover you.

The Magnus rep I spoke with also said there is a way to have you listed by the owner on the insurance policy, with a subrogation of harmlessness. Forgive me if this sounds off, it's my memory.. Basically it makes it that you are listed on there policy and if there is a crash the insurance company cannot sue you. Which is the main person who sues mechanics. It would not stop a civil suit from families, but that would be more rare. But for sure the insurance company would sue.

If you go the waiver route to protect against being sued by the family keep in mind it's only between you and the family, not any passengers who did not know about this waiver. If per say a passengers family member sued, they would more than likely aim for the insurance company with the deeper pockets than a lowly AME.

Your truly only protection is the insurance. But I'm feeling I would be comfortable using the subrogation of harmlessness, and being listed not he policy.

If you did enough annuals the insurance would be divided up enough that it wouldn't be too bad. And a selling feature.

Then there is the specialty equipment too…. spark plug cleaner/tester, motostat, mag timer, oil filter cutter, orings etc.. Shops have that on hand.
