Maybe they were just displacement taxiing it from the other side of the lake...
Engine's still in it.... figure it's still got to be at least half a ton. More aerodynamic than lots of other externals.

Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

And people think I'm crazy when I tell them about canoes ties to the float struts....
A funny variation I found:

I flew QDB during my first season as a commercially minted pilot...
Anyone know what the hell happened to her?!?

A funny caption I stole from PPRUNE
“Daaad!"
"Look, son, when you’ve grown proper floats ’n all, you can go out on your own. Until then...

Re: Is this for real ?
I have no doubt that this is absolutely authentic. Anyone who hasn't seen one of those PZL-powered Otters perform probably wouldn't believe it.
Re: Is this for real ?
No problemo!
I once flew 2 crates of ornamental school moldings up to a fly-in community. They were 32' x 6' x 12" each. I carried them both on the pilot side so I could see if they became loose. The trip was 165 miles one way. Just a little rudder trim needed

Drinking lots of coffee lately, at a nice safe jungle desk, wishing I were flying......
Re: Is this for real ?
It probably is real - I have flown lumber, EDO 2000 floats (one at a time), aluminum boats on 180/185's. We also flew a Super Cub fuselage and wings (separately) on the side of a Beaver. I had a debate on the dock with the pilot/owner of the Beaver about taking the fabric off the Super Cub fuselage - he was in charge and elected to take the fabric off - BIG MISTAKE!! Instead of having one moderate amount of drag - we had a hundred little amounts of drag from each exposed tube! Caution - anything you tie on the side of an airplane does degrade performance!!

Curious as to what you would do if they did become loose1000 HP wrote:...so I could see if they became loose

Re: Is this for real ?
Ive seen a TurboBeaver with a 14 foot aluminum boat strapped to the struts (although probably much lighter), so im not surprized at the 172 fuselage strapped to the struts.

Re: Is this for real ?
Usually the plan would be to slow down, pick a spot to land, and do it. As quickly as possible. Loose does not mean falling off. However, the Otter's high tail could possibly be a bonus if they did fall off. IF they went straight back the horizontal stabilizer might not get taken off. On a Beaver or a Caravan you probably are toast.dirtdr wrote:Curious as to what you would do if they did become loose1000 HP wrote:...so I could see if they became loose

Re: Is this for real ?
A real pilot would have used a 185 to haul that load.

Re: Is this for real ?
The worse drag I've ever experienced with and external load was 2 bicycles tied to a 185. I've carried much heavier and bigger loads but those bikes were the most noticeable by far.
Re: Is this for real ?
I once flew a full size pool slate table tied on the otter, two 45' of gas tied on the other float for balance.
A little flap and 80MPH all the way. The aircraft handled good.
